An Interview with The Crash Engine

Posted August 13, 2007

Loud Is Relative: How did the band form?
The Crash Engine: We all met at the University of Oregon dorm halls. The band started as an acoustic guitar trio playing original songs around campus at various coffee shops. From there, we decided to turn up the volume a bit and go electric. After losing one of the original members and cycling through various bass players, we decided to be a trio again- this time guitar, bass and drums.

Loud Is Relative: Who are some of your influences?
The Crash Engine: Every musician/songwriter is influenced in some way by everything that they listen to. We all listened to hugely sucessful bands like Nirvana, STP, and Sunny Day Real Estate, but also a lot of smaller indie groups like Pinback, No Knife, Hot Water Music etc..

Loud Is Relative: Who writes the songs, what are they about?
The Crash Engine: We all have input in writing the songs, although the original idea is usually started by myself or Tom (guitar/vox). The songs are about all kinds of stuff, so it's not easy to generalize them. We always try to convey those feelings that you can't put into words.

Loud Is Relative: Outside of playing music, what do you guys do for fun?
The Crash Engine: We like to wander through the Oregon forest, needlepoint, russian roulette- you know, the normal shit.

Loud Is Relative: Tell us a story of something crazy you've either done or seen while touring?
The Crash Engine: Does finishing two half gallons of Wild Turkey in one night count? um...I guess probably playing a show in total darkness in a wooden shack in the outskirts of Salt Lake City with two industrial-death-metal bands and a swamp cooler.

Loud Is Relative: Three words to describe your show...
The Crash Engine: Rock. Sex. Party.

Loud Is Relative: What's next for the band?
The Crash Engine: We will hopefully be playing at the CMJ Music Festival this October in NYC. Other than that, we will be doing a ton of touring and are hoping to make it over to Europe in the not too distant future.

Loud Is Relative: Tell us about your upcoming shows and why fans should come and see you...
The Crash Engine: We're playing with a bunch of cool bands at the Hawthorne Theater on August 25th. It's gonna be loud, it's gonna be rock, it's gonna kick ass, we'll see you there...
