Loud Is Relative Features A Blinding Silence

Loud Is Relative is proud to announce A Blinding Silence as their next Featured Artist. This band recently relocated to Portland and is ready to take on this new city, one amazing concert at a time... We happened to get lucky enough to have their first show back in the scene since their hiatus as our very first "Loud Is Relative Presents..." show!

About A Blinding Silence

A Blinding Silence formed in the summer of 2003 in Lancaster, CA. They're a family that has a dream, a philosophy, and a goal: love, beauty, music, and hope. Their influences range from rock, to punk, to indie, to metal, to hardcore. As long as it is melodic, and as long as it is positive. The band has been Buzzplay's Artist of the Month twice and has been ranked as high as #2 on Purevolume's Unsigned Artist Chart (in the Alternative, Screamo , and Post Hardcore genres). After a year hiatus, A Blinding Silence is back with a couple new members and a new city... Portland doesn't know what it's in for.

Loud Is Relative Announces Tragedy Andy as their Next Featured Artist

Loud Is Relative is proud to announce Tragedy Andy as their next Featured Artist. We caught this Portland-based band as they recently wrapped up a West Coast tour in San Diego! We liked their music (and attitudes) so much that we decided to book them for our very first "Loud Is Relative Presents..." concert at the Hawthorne Theatre on August 25th.

About Tragedy Andy

Hailing from the unkempt and gritty streets of San Francisco, comes the group known as Tragedy Andy. Fusing Catchy hooks, bittersweet lyrics and enough 'Rock!' to shake the Himalayaas! Tragedy Andy has relocated to Portland and is taking the new musical landscape by storm. With elements of rock, punk, soul and emotional pop, Tragedy Andy has sculpted a well fought for niche in their difficult to categorize genre. As they come through your town, be sure to get your tickets early, cause you don't want to miss this band!

An Interview with The Crash Engine

Loud Is Relative: How did the band form?
The Crash Engine: We all met at the University of Oregon dorm halls. The band started as an acoustic guitar trio playing original songs around campus at various coffee shops. From there, we decided to turn up the volume a bit and go electric. After losing one of the original members and cycling through various bass players, we decided to be a trio again- this time guitar, bass and drums.

Loud Is Relative: Who are some of your influences?
The Crash Engine: Every musician/songwriter is influenced in some way by everything that they listen to. We all listened to hugely sucessful bands like Nirvana, STP, and Sunny Day Real Estate, but also a lot of smaller indie groups like Pinback, No Knife, Hot Water Music etc..

Loud Is Relative: Who writes the songs, what are they about?
The Crash Engine: We all have input in writing the songs, although the original idea is usually started by myself or Tom (guitar/vox). The songs are about all kinds of stuff, so it's not easy to generalize them. We always try to convey those feelings that you can't put into words.

Loud Is Relative: Outside of playing music, what do you guys do for fun?
The Crash Engine: We like to wander through the Oregon forest, needlepoint, russian roulette- you know, the normal shit.

Loud Is Relative: Tell us a story of something crazy you've either done or seen while touring?
The Crash Engine: Does finishing two half gallons of Wild Turkey in one night count? um...I guess probably playing a show in total darkness in a wooden shack in the outskirts of Salt Lake City with two industrial-death-metal bands and a swamp cooler.

Loud Is Relative: Three words to describe your show...
The Crash Engine: Rock. Sex. Party.

Loud Is Relative: What's next for the band?
The Crash Engine: We will hopefully be playing at the CMJ Music Festival this October in NYC. Other than that, we will be doing a ton of touring and are hoping to make it over to Europe in the not too distant future.

Loud Is Relative: Tell us about your upcoming shows and why fans should come and see you...
The Crash Engine: We're playing with a bunch of cool bands at the Hawthorne Theater on August 25th. It's gonna be loud, it's gonna be rock, it's gonna kick ass, we'll see you there...

An Interview with A Cautionary Tale

Loud Is Relative: How do you guys know each other?
A Cautionary Tale: Nick O'Donnel and Chris Glaab had played in varied bands (blues, jazz, ska) together in L.A. for many years. they moved to Portland independently and were surprised to find each other here. they placed an ad in the weekly looking for conspirators and Rich Boles showed up - fresh from what constitutes the Phoenix noise/folk/rock scene. The formation of A Cautionary Tale did not come until 2 years later with the addition of Kevin Van Geem, a bay area drummer Nick met while attending the Portland State University's jazz program.

Loud Is Relative: Who are some of your influences?
A Cautionary Tale: Sun Ra, The Bad Plus, Manitas de Plata, Black Flag, Fugazi, John Frusciente, Cornelius, Phoenix

Loud Is Relative: Who writes the songs, what are they about?
A Cautionary Tale: Rich writes the words. The songs are about mistakes and corrections.

Loud Is Relative: Outside of playing music, what do you guys do for fun?
A Cautionary Tale: Frisbee, sailing, dj-ing, playing other music, travel, fondue, motorcycles, sewing, reading, writing.

Loud Is Relative: Three words to describe your show...
A Cautionary Tale: Dynamic, Unexpected, Energetic

Loud Is Relative: What's next for the band?
A Cautionary Tale: We're recording an EP for Visceral Impulse due out in December.

Loud Is Relative: Tell us about your upcoming shows and why fans should come and see you...
A Cautionary Tale: We're playing with some incredible talent (Friendly Skies, Bark Hide and Horn, Wooden Nickle...) at some really fun venues (Someday Lounge, The White Eagle, Kelly's Olympian). Come out and we will humbly kick your ass!
