iNSPERATiONAl TEACHER.

The Power of Harshness.Mrs. HumphreyJodie Johnson
I walked in the door. There were pictures all over the wall. Black and white photographs, flower pictures and right above her was the picture of Ophelia dead. The irony. Why was a dead lady the focal point of the room? I was scared. She was standing directly below it, dictating the class. It was day three of my senior year and I had the bright idea to get out of my first ever regular class and advance to AP English. I gave her my blue paper Im in your class now She looked at the paper. She looked at me. She looked at the paper. Her eyes slowly rose to my face Are you sure you can handle it? I was ripped. In front of the whole class. My anger raised and my response flew from my mouth. WELL. I was in AP last year. Not the best excuse. The year started out horribly. I was already the odd one out, the one she picked on, and everyone knows she picks that one.
Starting out with hard work, followed by more hard work, continued with more, and of course ending with hard work, I was stressed. She always picked on me. WellJodie. Whats the underlying idea? I slowly grew on to her catch phrases. It was like an instant wind up doll right at my finger tips. I would show her my paper, pull her string as she would tilt her head and look at me. Her eyes gazing burning holes into my brain that sent out little Humphreys to teach me how to think and then shed say it its good. BUT. Whats the underlying idea? I soon came into realization that I needed to grow as a writer and not over the course of the year, but over the course of the weekend.
The year slowly passed on as I, still being intimidated by Ms. Humphrey, tried to get on her good side. But that was soon shattered. I hate brown nosers. She was so confident in everything she said. She was fearless. She was flawless. And more and more I wanted to get to know her and be like her. In a sense of my own way of course. I visited her class more often. I engaged in conversations. I acted like I knew what was going on. She read right through me.
The report card came. College Prep Algebra: A+, College NOW!: B+, Childcare Development: A+, Senior Lit: C. She ruined my perfect honor roll, but I wasnt mad. I was disappointed, in myself. I went to talk to her on one of my many trips to her room. And of course, she ripped me. There comes a time when you need to actually do your work. She told me. I then left her room and made it my goal. I was going to impress her and prove to her; I am ready for her class.
I tried even harder. I started putting extreme effort into my pieces. I even visited her during my free classes. My whole out look on responsibilities was turned around, not only because I wanted to, but because I had to. I had to show her I could do it. In her class I realized, I had to grow old. I had to become responsible, it was that time. Through the year I grew as a writer, as a worker and as a person and it was all because Mrs. Humphrey pushed me. Her harsh reality pushed me to become a better writer, because I got a proficient. Her harsh reality has taught me about myself, I became responsible and her harsh reality helped me as a student, because this was the year I got the recognition for being the good student.
At the beginning I did not like her; in fact I could not even stand her. She made my life miserable. But over the course of the year, she changed me into a responsible person. I realize the picture of Ophelia was a symbol. It was a symbol of the change of people, and I had become that change. The old me died and the new me was reborn because of her rips and comments. Thank you Ms. Humphrey.
