OOPS! (Friends, please read!)

Hey all - John here. I just logged into here for the first time since like April or May and just approved the friend requests and comments. So sorry for not seeing any of it sooner! Been workin' like crazy on the actual site over at Jesusfreakhideout.com, and been trying to be a bit better at maintaining our MySpace (www.myspace.com/jesusfreakhideout), but for the best way to contact us, just send us an email. :o) Sorry for being lame with the replies! We really do love you all! Even if I stink at replying.

Thanks! And have a great weekend!

God bless,
John

Gettin Krunk in the NYC

Hey guys, John here. Been a busy couple of weeks and I thought I'd just update you all on some things...

Kevin, Amy, and I went to NYC Saturday to see Steve Taylor's new film "The Second Chance" which is in limited release. Michael W. Smith made his acting debut. He did a decent job although it was strange seeing the Worship and Worship Again hitmaker on the big screen in such a role as he played. It'd be interesting to see if he does anything else. Maybe he can be in a Spielberg action film or a comedy with Jim Carrey.

After the film, we hit up Planet Hollywood and braved the wretched videos from the likes of Eminem, Britney Spears, and Simple Plan while we tried to enjoy our overpriced NYC dinner. The food did taste a bit better when Switchfoot's "Dare You To Move" came on. Maybe I wouldn't have minded paying 10 bucks for a chicken fingers appetizer if they even just looped "Dare You To Move" the hour we were there. Heck, I'd have taken almost any CCM pop act over Eminem or a Britney medley remix anyday.

We then hit up The Knitting Factory (which is so painfully close to the Hook & Ladder 8... the firehouse they used for exterior shots of the Ghostbusters headquarters in the original films... ah, one of these days I'll check it out closer. When that happens, I'll post photos of my goofy grin indeed. Heck, I'll post our goofy photo from Planet Hollywood in the meantime), to catch a late performance by Gotee artists Fighting Instinct, and most importantly, Family Force 5. We went to this show with the single intention of enjoying ourselves... so I didn't bother taking photos of the show and focused on just enjoying myself at a show for the first time in I can't tell you how long (not that I don't want to tell you, I just plain can't remember). The show started late and a tiny crowd formed in a dismally lit bar room for Fighting Instinct's opening set. This is the first time I've seen them live despite briefly hearing the prerelease of their [unimpressive] debut album. They put on a decent set, but the guys just seemed bored on stage. I mean, perhaps it was their midnight set causing them to be exhausted, but they just sort of went through the motions with their songs and finished up after a few. Ah, but then there's Family Force 5...

I first saw these guys at GMA last year and I wasn't sure how I felt about it. Before long, "Kountry Gentlemen" was sort of the GMA anthem for us and I was hooked. I saw them again at Creation East (two sets... very nice) and in November (reviews of all these shows are on JFH... this lil review is exclusive to our myspacers and purvolumespacers)... and these guys just consistently tear up the stage for one of the most infectious sets you'll ever see. They opened with "Color Of Water," which curiously is a b-side and won't be on the final album hitting Christian stores March 28, and mainstream market May 3rd (but is available entirely on iTunes NOW) and just plain continued to rip up the stage with their high energy. At first I didn't know what to do with myself since I wasn't taking notes or taking photos, but before long we were swinging our fatigued selves at 1am in New York City. This was definitely a unique venue experience for me. I've seen bar shows before with Christian acts performing, but this one was different... The crowd was a lot bigger for FF5 but there was one particularly drunk girl who decided the band was playing for her and began dancing (and wobbling) seductively in front of the band. They didn't aknowledge her, which was a wise choice, but that probably is what led her to reach up at two different times to grope two different member's legs. They handled it pretty well (mostly backing away inconspicuously), but we weren't sure whether to laugh or what. The guys mentioned to us afterwards that this wasn't the first time something like that has happened, but luckily it wasn't (and hasn't been) worse than something like that.

It's venue atmospheres like this that make me appreciate the Christian venue. Closed, sure, sheltered, fine, but being surrounded by drunk party animals isn't my idea of a good time. It's nice to wake up in the morning and remember the good time you had the night before... not wake up with a hang over and no recollection of the band you paid to see the night before or the drinks you wasted your money on...

Anyway, following a final Starbucks run at 3am in NYC, we hit the road and went back home, deliriously tired the entire time...

As far as JfH site happenings, I'm excited to let you know that this week we've debuted our first GUITAR giveaway in support of Warren Barfield's sophomore release Reach. We've also got some other stuff cooking so keep your eyes peeled.

Until then, rock on kids and pick up the new record from Mainstay and The Fold TODAY. They have our stamps of approval.

God bless,
John
