Decisions

I'm poor, in college and starting universtiy applications within the next 3 months. Growing up is looming over me, as are all the shows coming up. Apparently November and December make for some very busy venues! So, chances are I will be attending even higher education out of province which means at least an extra 6 grand a year.. which means even though I will be working full time December-September I need to start watching how I spend my cash. Which means that I need to start watching concert tickets.

November 6th will be the Inyish Monthly Mess at Il Motor.
November 20th will be the amazing Brand New concert at the Olympia Theatre.
December 16th will be Patrick Watson (surprise!) at the Metropolis.

Then decisions will need to be made :(

November 18th is The Rural Alberta Home Advantage at Club Lambi.
November 25th is Do Make Say Think at La Salsa Rosa.
November 27th is Imogen Heap at Le National.
December 3rd is Hey Rosetta! at Cabaret de Musée
December 16th is Thursday at Foufounes Electriques

Bitches

You know what really pisses me off? When people bitch and moan over the fact that they didn't get an encore at a show. What the fuck is that?

You went an saw a band you (hopefully) love and respect, you saw them live, in their element, playing music that means something to you and to the artists themselves. Then you go and bitch about how they didn't sing another song? What the fuck?

YOU. SAW. THEM. PLAY. ALREADY.

Some sets are an hour and a half... that's a long ass time for musicians to sing in a row!

Not to mention the fact that YOU SAW THEM LIVE.

Not everyone gets the chance, the band you just saw might not do a world tour. Hell, most of the musicians I love don't come to Canada because they either can't get across the border or don't have the money to get all the way up here or across the pond... I would kill to see.. let's say Lydia live, but they don't come to Canda.

Consider yourself lucky to selfish little punks.

SPLIT !!?

Ok, so the last.fm shoutbox for Margot & the Nuclear So and So's is telling me that the band split. Their myspace and twitter are all about new songs and recording for a new album.

This band better not break up or I am going to hyperventilate.
I need to see them live, they need to come to Montreal and not cancel 2 days before the show.

Someone better be joking or part of me will die inside.

Patrick Watson

You know what I love about Patrick Watson, other than his (amazing) talent or his super adorable slash crazy giggle? The way that he has such childish glee when he is on stage. This is a musician who absolutely adores what he does for a living. It's infectious, you go see him in concert and you can't help but be entertained and captivated.

The only problem that I had with the show was that it was way too short. Well, that and there was too much stuff from Wooden Arms. Call me nostalgic, but I do like hearing older songs, I mean yes, he did play hits like "The Great Escape" and "The Storm" but the majority of the show was Wooden Arms. I guess it makes sense since it was released in 2009, but what can you do. All of the music is amazing anyway so it isn't really like we got short-changed.

I figured that it wouldn't be able to stand up to the performance at the Jazz Festival this past summer. While playing "Where The Wild Things Are" I couldn't help but imagine the shadow puppets or while playing "Machinery Of The Heavens" I still imagined the balloons being let go. It was different, the venue was pretty tiny compared to the 5 blocks the show had at the Fest. But let me tell you, it came close, it came damn close. This band pretty much cemented themselves as my favourite live act halfway through "Beijing", partly due to the amazing drum solo by Robbie Kuster, but mostly because of the energy that was given to the performance. I don't know if I was captivated by the music or the way that the crowd clapped and sang along, but I was mesmerized throughout the entire hour and a half of performance. I love when musicians interact with the crowd, and I loved the English/French adorableness that they had going on. Plus, any band that whips out a megaphone earns points. I always did wonder how he got that sound when playing "The Storm". Let me tell  you, these guys (and girls on the strings) are lovely artists.

He did the "Walking Song". I kid you not, he had the microphone thing on his back and the guys walking around the first floor (which I was on, awesome!) and people hummed and clapped and standing ovation please. Several standing ovations in fact, two of which resulted in us getting encores. Fantastic stuff.

Apparently Mr. Watson is taking guitar lessons from fellow band mate Simon Angell. He did not play for us, even though we tried. Oh how we tried. But hope was not lost for a way to close and amazing show, know why? Patrick sang "Man Like You" without a microphone with Simon on acoustic guitar and Robbie in cymbals, magic. And when I say magic, I mean Man Under the Sea live at the Lowlands in 2007 type magic.

Another encore time, after yet another standing ovation, a rightfully deserved standing ovation. We got to pick the song. Try as we might, apparently it's impossible to play "Daydreamer" live, they have never done it and never will. We got "Drifters" instead. Look at me, instead, as if it is not up to standards of other songs. It was great. Excellent.

Cue, standing ovation. Cue, final encore. You know what i find makes some musicians unique? The way that they make their music. Watson has been known for some.. eccentric (a bicycle?, tin cans, kazoos) choices but hey, last night we got a rusty old hand saw. It would appear that Mr. Watson has written a new song, en Francais. So we, the ridiculously luck crowd got to hear a song that I don't think has ever been played or will ever be released. It was signing, piano and hand saw.

Blood spectacular.

Cue standing ovation.
