A hypochondriac is someone with a preoccupying fear of having a serious illness. It lasts more than six months. They have to have constant reassurance from doctors and professionals. It is considered a psychiatric disorder. It is sometimes referred to as health anxiety. Hypochondria often comes with other illnesses such as depression, panic disorder, anxiety and OCD.
Some of the symptoms are thinking they have a serious disease such as AIDS or cancer because of something simple such as a headache or a cough. Another would be going to the doctor a lot. If the doctor doesnt tell the person what they want to hear, the person might not believe them and may switch doctors. The person may spend a lot of time worrying about their alleged illness and may do a lot of medical research looking up their illness.
There are many theories of what causes hypochondria. The first one is based on Freud's theory that unconsious thoughts could be reawakened in adult life and may lead to any of the above illnesses that come with hypochondria. The second is that the behavior is learned by people the person talks to and the way the person is treated when they are hurt. The third theory is that the person may have a genetic predisposition to the illness. This just means that it runs in the family. The fourth theory is the posture theory. Hypochondria means below the cartilage. It was thought to be due to disturbed function of the spleen.
Since there are no real causes, there are no real solutions. To get treated, the person must first acknowledge the interplay of mind and body. It is suggested that people with hypochondria get therapy.
It is thought that about six percent of the population are affection by hypochondria but it is hard to know because this illness is hard to diagnose. It is usually diagnosed as the above illnesses.
Why do gangs exist? It's hard to say. Why do friends exist? Why do criminals exist? To put it simply, a gang is a combination of a little bit of both these things. Studies have shown that people are more likely to commit a crime if they are in a group. A gang could commit a crime that none of the individuals had intended or would have done on their own. The police definition of a gang is "A group of individuals, juvenile and/or adult who associate on a continuous basis, form an allegiance for a common purpose and are involved in delinquent or criminal activity". A gang could start out as a group of kids that commit minor crimes such as shiplifting, then expands and graduates to more serious crimes. Tattoos and graffiti have been long associated with gang membership. It is said that graffiti is a way for gangs to communicate. There are three R's of gang mentality. They are Reputation, Respect, and Revenge/Retalliation. There are many reasons to join a gang. Some of them are identity, recognition, protection, love, belonging, money, and drugs. Gangs usually have a certain part of a city or turf that they stick to or consider "theirs". Gangs form anywhere that belonging and protection is important such as inner cities and prisons. Gangs in the 60's (the time of The Outsiders) committed many of the same crimes they do today such as shoplifting, beating people up and murder. Gangs have existed for as far back as we can think of. The basis of what they do and have done has not really changed. I would say that the way The Outsiders depicts gang life is pretty close to how it really is. Although gangs haven't really changed, they have been considered more of a threat than before. Kids are considered "at risk", and parents are warned all the time to keep a close watch on their children.
