Thanks for checkin out FireSky Future. Go to our purevolume page, or our myspace and check out our music and be our friend!! We have been working hard on writing new songs and getting some recordings, and we will start working on a full length album in a few weeks.
Firesky Future officially started recording on our first album last Saturday. So far the process has had mostly ups, but some downs. We're only just beginning on the process but feel very happy with what is being done so far. The drums for 6 of the 10 songs that will be on the album are complete(ish). We'll go back and review those drum takes later this week to make sure I didn't screw up too bad. Here is my rundown of the last weeks events: Friday, June 27 I've learned more about tuning drums this last week than I have in the last 13 years of drumming. I've never been a fan of tuning as it takes a lot of time and is usually pretty depressing. After spending a couple of hours tuning I finally caved in and used a drum key/tensioner that allows you to make sure each lug on the drum is at the same tension. It's basically the lazy mans way of tuning drums. Luckly though the lazy way actually worked out for once and is the drums sounded pretty awesome on Saturday. Saturday, June 28 We started the morning about 9am with getting all the drums mic'd up. This process is almost as important as tuning for creating the sound of the drums. It took us until about 11am until we were happy with the outcome and ready to actually start recording. Around 11:30 we recorded the first take of the album. It wasn't great... Unfortunately as a drummer one of your main jobs is keeping the beat. I am not the greatest at this, I usually speed up and slow down on stage, usually depending on the feel of the song, but also because I'm out of the habit of playing to a set beat. So playing with a click for the first time in months is taking some getting used to again. It didn't help that we also didn't have stereo for the headphones so I was only getting the click and scratch track (guitars and vocals recorded to help with playing the song) in one ear. After playing a few takes of Summer I started to get the hang of things again and started to get some good takes. We wrapped 'Summer' about 1pm. The next song on the agenda was 'Friday Night'. I love playing this song so, other than getting off the click a few times, the recording went pretty quickly, got done with it around 2:30-3:00. We took a lunch break with Andy and Cyrus and decided that it was time to take Andy up on the bet he lost in Chicago, the one where we got to give him a Mohawk. We made a video of this and took some pictures so expect to see Andy's new mohawk soon. Afterwards we started with a new song we have, if you've seen any of our recent shows you've heard it already. 'Local Tragedy' is quite possibly the most catchy and fun song we have and I can't wait to hear the recording finished for it. Unfortunately the speed we set for the song ended up being a little fast for what we wanted; so we couldn't do that track right then. After realizing that track's speed was off we started going through the other tracks and realized that most of the songs speed wasn't correct. Unfortunately that ended recording the drums for the day. Tuesday July 1 Started the day a little later as Sean had to work in the morning. Ended up getting everything going about 2pm. The first song of the day was going to be 'Middle of Nowhere'. Played through it a couple of times a discovered that something was wrong with the way the drums were sounding. Unfortunately, IL's lovely summer heat and humidity (although low the last couple of days) had cause the drums to go badly out of tune. Sean and I spent a couple of hours attempting to get the drums tuned and even went to the local music store to get a pitch pipe in an attempt to help tune. Our time was unfortunately wasted as we just couldn't get the drums to get in tune. We ended up calling the day short and going to eat Sushi with our friend and band photographer Seth. Recording day unfortunately wasted. Thursday July 3 Not willing to repeat the problems from Tuesday I spent most of the afternoon on Thursday scouring the internet for useful tips for drum tuning. After reading many long web pages about tuning I check out YouTube. Found a few good videos on there that ended up helping a lot more than reading any of the web sites had. Spent a couple of hours working on the drums and ended up getting them sounding pretty good, not quite as good as Saturday, but the drum heads were used by this point and I can't afford to rehead the drums every day. Sean got home from work around 4pm and off we went. We were able to get 'Middle of Nowhere' and 'Local Tragedy' finished and made up for Tuesday's mental kick to the groin. Hearing how the drums sound in there raw, unmixed, unmastered state has really got me excited for the finished project. Friday, July 4 That's right, I spent a good portion of my July 4th recording drums. Not my favorite July 4th, but it will be a memorable one. We finished the drums for two more songs, '8th Grade Guitar Project' and 'Bittersweet Denial'. '8th Grade' is a song the Sean and I had worked with on both of our previous bands, it was always a good song, but with Firesky Future it is taking on a whole new level. It's a fun and catch tune with some of Sean's best lyrics and possibly my new favorite drum part. 'Bittersweet' is a song the we really just finished in the last month or so. It's probably the song that will most show of our talent as a group and will end up being an incredible live song. Being our newest song I was a little worried about how long it might take to record, but it ended up going pretty quickly. So far the 6 songs that the drums are finished on are really inspiring and fill me with a greater sense of hope and excitement for the album than I already had. I can't wait until everyone can hear what we're doing, I feel this album is going to be really special. We're going to try and get the 4 remaining songs finished this Thursday and Friday so we can move on to the other instruments and vocals. We'll be taking lots of pics and vids of the entire process so make sure to check back often for those, as well as more diary entries from the other members of Firesky Future. Thanks for all the support we've received from all of you so far, can't wait to get this album in your hands and see you at shows this fall. Travis/FSF
FireSky Future has had a remarkably productive month of April. We've got enough songs for an album, and are in the process of working on covers and shaping up a setlist for our first shows. We've been booking a handful of shows in the area, and honing our songs in preparation for starting recording our debut album. We've booked two major shows you should all try to be at: May 30th @ The Canopy Club. It's an amazing venue, and a great time. If you're 19+, come by the Canopy Club in Urbana and we'll have an amazing show in store for you. June 19th @ Sylvie's Lounge. If you live in the Chicago area (primarily the southside), this intimate venue is going to be the place to be for a great show. Show up, and I promise you a great experience. May is going to be a very busy month for FSF with all the shows as well as the album recording, so keep your eyes peeled for more behind-the-scenes videos, pictures, and updates. You guys all rock!!!! _Andy/FSF
Hey guys! If you like what you hear on our Purevolume page and our myspace help us out and tell your friends!
