WRITERS BLOCK
We few know
Its in the way We speak, We think, We write
(We write!)
WeTwist the Words
Contort the Words
Bend the Words
Mend the Words
And occasionally, We
Weld the Words into a beautiful structure;
A statue under which We worship
(Our minds)
How peculiar
The way the words, fitted together
Can illustrate
With poise, and grace
Or how they can lift one
In so many ways,
In so many ways
They are infinite, and
Infinitely,
Unfortunately,
Disposable.
A ZOO WITH DESKS
School is boring. At least, thats what most kids say. We are forced against our will to go, we have to wake up at the crack of dawn, and on top of that, we have homework! Where is the justice? On too many occasions, school could be improved if only the classes and their teachers werent so boring. Classes seem pointless, and teachers behave as if they hate the classes they teach. Also, at school we feel like we arent allowed to do anything. Call phones, iPods, and other gadgets are not allowed, and those are the very tools that teens rely and thrive upon. The dress code restricts us, at least while we are on school grounds or representing Polk County in any way. Also, censorship is applied to almost everything, from books to art. However, above all these things, school can be an enjoyable experience. Some classes are interesting, and field trips are usually fun. But first and foremost, what makes school tolerable, what helps us survive, are friends. Friends are what really make school worthwhile.
Lets face it. Class sucks. And I swear, some of the senile, old teachers figure out ways to make us even more miserable than we should be. I mean, honestlywhat is their problem? The air conditioning is almost always absolutely freezing! How does the Administration expect us to focus when were being cryogenically impaired? Either that or the polar extreme, desert heat. I can see the headlines now Freshman Roasted to Death While Slaving Over Algebra Assignment. Also, the vast majority of students absolutely loathe worksheets and various other forms of busy work. They make us feel stupid, they never get graded, and all they really do is waste time. A trifecta of nightmarish proportion. Finally, what really makes class memorable, teachers behavior. You know what I mean. Those horrible traits pacing, monotone, manic-depressive temper and mood swings, all trademarks of a disgruntled educator. These three, of course, are only a select few of a vast array of outlandish behaviors, but I chose them for a reason. Firstly, pacing makes people nervous, period. They look like feral cats with Einstein hair pacing their cages! And monotonesdont make me start. We didnt come to school to listen to robots! Or bipolar fits, either. Teachers mood swings must be a miracle of God, they switch so fast! One second Mrs. So-and-so will be snoring and drooling on her teachers textbook, and in a fraction of a moment, shes howling at the class like a bloodthirsty demon! The poor students are left thinking, What is she on? Youve got to wonder who spiked the coffee in the teachers lounge
Many of the things that would make school better are things that were not allowed to do. For example, electronics. We arent allowed to have cell phones, CD players, iPods, PDAs, or any of the other gadgets we teenagers thrive upon. All we want to do is communicate, but apparently, communication with similar life-forms is forbidden. Also, widely debated, the school dress code. Many students despise this code, but we are punished for disobedience on the matter, so many students end up complying anyway. For example, in Texas, grills and gauges are not allowed. And, personally most astounding, in some schools, students were not allowed to wear purple during the period of Gay Rights activism. Now, I see why students should cover themselves up. Im all for it. But when we have tons of ridiculous rules, not just in the dress code, but everywhere, you have to start to wonder. What is the Administration so afraid of? The one thing that peeves me the most, being an arts-and-literature kind of student, is censorship. In schools across America, PTAs outlaw almost every kind of book imaginable, for many nonsensical reasons. And what causes such atrocity? My opinion is that these people arent open-minded enough. Also, works of art are banned from our schools, and why? The world may never know. Finally, what irks students most, censorship of writing and language. Nobody likes being told what they can or cannot do, especially when they are expressing themselves. All there is to say on these issues is-- just because you say we shouldnt doesnt mean we wont.
Sometimes even the penitentiary we call school can be enjoyable, on a good day, maybe even exciting. If you really like any of your classes, its a huge improvement. Interesting teachers and activities make school seem more optional than obligatory, so that you might actually want to go. An outrageously cool teacher is enjoyed by almost everybody. More exciting school activities can be found on the most boring of days. For example, bring dog biscuits on lockdown days. The drug dogs will go nuts! Even better, picture days. Its always fun to see how stupid people will look in the yearbook. The best prank for this situation is to jump out at people just as the picture is being taken. The results are priceless. You can also superglue thumbtacks to the seats of desk chairs, and get the whole class involved in the festivities. But what do you need to help you pull these fantastic tricks off? Friends. Friends are what really help us survive school. They are our allies, offense and defense. They put up with us, through thick and thin. Friends are what make school worth the hassle, and are actually the only reason most kids have for coming to this asylum. Maybe school just might be okay, if only for wacky teachers, hilarious pranks, and best friends.
We all know that school is just a zoo with desks, and we also know that its a cruel and unusual punishment for being young. Class is boring, we arent allowed to do absolutely anything, and we hate it. But there is also another side to the equation: school can be enjoyable. And part of the responsibility to have fun is on us. So, children, I ask you now: Do you want to go to school? Heck no! Are you crazy? We can, however, make it worth the time. This shall be our valiant mission for this and future generations.
