A. WHY WAS JACKSON ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR AND UNPOPULAR OF AMERICAN PRESIDENTS? GIVE EXAMPLES.
Jackson was popular because of the democracy he set up, patronage, and the general idea of the spoils system. Jackson also shared the beliefs of Americans who feared that the power of the government might rise to greatly. He attacked politicians who he thought were corrupt and laws that he thought would limit the freedom of his people. Using his power of the veto, he restricted federal activity as much as possible. With all these positives, he was a very popular guy. Then there was the Tariff of 1828. I dont even have to explain this, but man, do Americans hate high taxes! He also headed the Indian relocation. Those were some pretty angry Indians after they were forced to move just so that the white folk could take over. He even caused the Trail of Tears. Yeah, there were a lot of sad Indians back in the day.
B. WHAT WAS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ABOLITIONISTS AND THE MOVEMENT FOR WOMEN'S RIGHTS?
Abolitionists wanted to abolish slavery. These abolitionists spent all their time trying to free the slaves. But what makes slaves so different from women? Neither blacks nor women had any freedom. Women could not vote, while neither could the blacks. Two groups; struggling for equality. Hand in hand they fought for their rights. Both were inferiors, rising to the top.
C. DESCRIBE THE SITUATION AS IT EXISTED BETWEEN THE NORTH AND SOUTH FROM THE YEARS 1820-1850
With out a doubt, slavery existed in both the north and the south of America. But the one key difference was that the hate was much stronger down south.
D. EXPLAIN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE NATIONAL ECONOMY IN THE EARLY DECADES OF THE 1800'S
During the early 1800s Americans realized that with the different parts of the country came different places for work. In the northwest people grew corn, wheat, and other grains. In the northeast, pork, beef, and beer were made. Industrialization increased a lot when Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin. Pennsylvania had a huge coal-mining industry. Also, the northeast was full of people looking for work. Because of this city populations greatly rose.
I HATE THIS FUCKING BOOK
Willy Loman
Despite his desperate searching through his past, Willy does not achieve the self-realization or self-knowledge typical of the tragic hero. The quasi-resolution that his suicide offers him represents only a partial discovery of the truth. While he achieves a professional understanding of himself and the fundamental nature of the sales profession, Willy fails to realize his personal failure and betrayal of his soul and family through the meticulously constructed artifice of his life. He cannot grasp the true personal, emotional, spiritual understanding of himself as a literal loman or low man. Willy is too driven by his own willy-ness or perverse willfulness to recognize the slanted reality that his desperate mind has forged. Still, many critics, focusing on Willys entrenchment in a quagmire of lies, delusions, and self-deceptions, ignore the significant accomplishment of his partial self-realization. Willys failure to recognize the anguished love offered to him by his family is crucial to the climax of his torturous day, and the play presents this incapacity as the real tragedy. Despite this failure, Willy makes the most extreme sacrifice in his attempt to leave an inheritance that will allow Biff to fulfill the American Dream.
Bens final mantraThe jungle is dark, but full of diamondsturns Willys suicide into a metaphorical moral struggle, a final skewed ambition to realize his full commercial and material capacity. His final act, according to Ben, is not like an appointment at all but like a diamond . . . rough and hard to the touch. In the absence of any real degree of self-knowledge or truth, Willy is able to achieve a tangible result. In some respect, Willy does experience a sort of revelation, as he finally comes to understand that the product he sells is himself. Through the imaginary advice of Ben, Willy ends up fully believing his earlier assertion to Charley that after all the highways, and the trains, and the appointments, and the years, you end up worth more dead than alive.
Biff Loman
Unlike Willy and Happy, Biff feels compelled to seek the truth about himself. While his father and brother are unable to accept the miserable reality of their respective lives, Biff acknowledges his failure and eventually manages to confront it. Even the difference between his name and theirs reflects this polarity: whereas Willy and Happy willfully and happily delude themselves, Biff bristles stiffly at self-deception. Biffs discovery that Willy has a mistress strips him of his faith in Willy and Willys ambitions for him. Consequently, Willy sees Biff as an underachiever, while Biff sees himself as trapped in Willys grandiose fantasies. After his epiphany in Bill Olivers office, Biff determines to break through the lies surrounding the Loman family in order to come to realistic terms with his own life. Intent on revealing the simple and humble truth behind Willys fantasy, Biff longs for the territory (the symbolically free West) obscured by his fathers blind faith in a skewed, materialist version of the American Dream. Biffs identity crisis is a function of his and his fathers disillusionment, which, in order to reclaim his identity, he must expose.
Linda Loman - Willys loyal, loving wife. Linda suffers through Willys grandiose dreams and self-delusions. Occasionally, she seems to be taken in by Willys self-deluded hopes for future glory and success, but at other times, she seems far more realistic and less fragile than her husband. She has nurtured the family through all of Willys misguided attempts at success, and her emotional strength and perseverance support Willy until his collapse.
Happy Loman
Happy shares none of the poetry that erupts from Biff and that is buried in Willyhe is the stunted incarnation of Willys worst traits and the embodiment of the lie of the happy American Dream. As such, Happy is a difficult character with whom to empathize. He is one-dimensional and static throughout the play. His empty vow to avenge Willys death by finally beat[ing] this racket provides evidence of his critical condition: for Happy, who has lived in the shadow of the inflated expectations of his brother, there is no escape from the Dreams indoctrinated lies. Happys diseased condition is irreparablehe lacks even the tiniest spark of self-knowledge or capacity for self-analysis. He does share Willys capacity for self-delusion, trumpeting himself as the assistant buyer at his store, when, in reality, he is only an assistant to the assistant buyer. He does not possess a hint of the latent thirst for knowledge that proves Biffs salvation. Happy is a doomed, utterly duped figure, destined to be swallowed up by the force of blind ambition that fuels his insatiable sex drive.
Charley - Willys next-door neighbor. Charley owns a successful business and his son, Bernard, is a wealthy, important lawyer. Willy is jealous of Charleys success. Charley gives Willy money to pay his bills, and Willy reveals at one point, choking back tears, that Charley is his only friend.
Bernard - Bernard is Charleys son and an important, successful lawyer. Although Willy used to mock Bernard for studying hard, Bernard always loved Willys sons dearly and regarded Biff as a hero. Bernards success is difficult for Willy to accept because his own sons lives do not measure up.
Ben - Willys wealthy older brother. Ben has recently died and appears only in Willys daydreams. Willy regards Ben as a symbol of the success that he so desperately craves for himself and his sons.
The Woman - Willys mistress when Happy and Biff were in high school. The Womans attention and admiration boost Willys fragile ego. When Biff catches Willy in his hotel room with The Woman, he loses faith in his father, and his dream of passing math and going to college dies.
Howard Wagner - Willys boss. Howard inherited the company from his father, whom Willy regarded as a masterful man and a prince. Though much younger than Willy, Howard treats Willy with condescension and eventually fires him, despite Willys wounded assertions that he named Howard at his birth.
Stanley - A waiter at Franks Chop House. Stanley and Happy seem to be friends, or at least acquaintances, and they banter about and ogle Miss Forsythe together before Biff and Willy arrive at the restaurant.
Miss Forsythe and Letta - Two young women whom Happy and Biff meet at Franks Chop House. It seems likely that Miss Forsythe and Letta are prostitutes, judging from Happys repeated comments about their moral character and the fact that they are on call.
Jenny - Charleys secretary.
