Music Review, Vol. 2

Mastodon - Blood Mountain = ***

The follow up to Leviathan, Blood Mountain is absolutely solid from start to finish. Each song written in a stream of conciousness fashion with the most abstract of song titles and themes. This album has been highly praised by fans and critics alike, and i tend to agree with them. There's definitely a reason why Tool took them out on tour. I'm conivinced each album has a different atmosphere to it. Remission (which i'm not a huge fan of) had a kind of scatter brained-confused feel to it. It felt like wearing shoes that are two sizes to big and trying to run a marathon. Leviathan truly felt and sounded like you were at sea, fighting against the sea beast Moby Dick (the entire album is a concept of the book by the same name). Blood Mountain has that ethreal quality you would expect from the original fairy tales. You know, the ones written by the brothers Grimm that actually scared people. Key tracks, The Wolf Is Loose, Colony of Birchmen and Crystal Skull.

Lordi - The Arockalypse = ***

Imagine a world ruled by Glenn Danzig, Brian Posehn and all of the Dungeons and Dragons geeks from high school. Lordi would be the house band for that world. The next evolution in GWAR type fashion with the sex turned down. Straight out of Finland, these Supermonsters deliver nothing shy of head banging-fist pumping-beer chugging-rock n roll. Misfits style lyrics paired with increadible musicican-ship creates one of my top albums of 2007. Key tracks Supermonsters, Hard Rock Hallelujiah, and Who's Your Daddy? If you pick up this album, I guarentee you'll be singing the Anthem of the Phantoms!

Lamb of God - Sacrament = ***

Hailed by many as the album of the year, and with just the first few opening notes, it's not hard to hear why. I tried to sum up the entire album in one word upon my third consecutive listen, and settled on relentles. From start to finish, Sacrament never lets up. Songs like Foot to the Throat and Walk With Me In Hell, it's obvious why they spent as much time as they did in the studio. Prepare to be beaten, bloody and sore when you've finished this puppy; and it'll have you screaming "Thank you sir may I have another!" Key tracks Walk With Me In Hell, Beating on Death's Door, Foot to the Throat and Redneck (mostly just because Big Mike (rip) was in the video as a roadie.).

Apoptygma Berzerk - You and Me Against the World = ****

This is my other greatest album of 2007. Apop is known for his dance styled Depeche Mode sound, but this album slings out the guitars and live drums for some fantastic anthemic rock n roll. Think if U2 had spent their lives making electronic music and made a rock album, and you'd be close (though Stephen Groth can't sing like Bono.) Each song begs you to climb just a little higher, until you reach the only electronic song on the album and you can finally rest at the peak. Key tracks We're in this Together, Cambodia, Mercy Kill, Is Love to Blame and You and Me Against the World.

Mars Volta - Amputechture = *

The third studio album from the better half of At the Drive-In, has unfortuneatly delievered the same old hat. Don't get me wrong, the songs are still good, but it seems that the boys have used up all their tricks on the previous two albums. Amputechture is almost. . . .sleepy. There's no unexpected changes, nothing special about it. It nearly sounds forced. If you're a huge true blooded fan, I don't want to offend you but they could have done better.

Death Cab for Cutie - Transatlanticism = ***

We played the hell out of this album back at HT, and i couldn't help but fall in love with it. Lyrics written with the literalness of Morissey and the beauty of true innocence. The method of storytelling is what I love best, I have to be honest. The album doesnt rock, there's no shredding, nothing bombastic about it. Just great songs and great song writing. Key Tracks The New Year, Title and Registration, Tiny Vessels and We Looked Like Giants.

Nine Inch Nails - Year Zero = ****

The easiest (and most obscure for non NIN fans) way for me to describe Year Zero is by this formula: take the raw orginality of Pretty Hate Machine, add in the textures of The Downward Spiral, plus the atmosphere of The Fragile and the innovation and production of With Teeth and you have Year Zero.

Trent has called this a soundtrack to a movie that doesn't exist. It certainly isn't a Michael Bay piece of garbage. If it were put to a screen play, it would probably be by a true artist, one not from this country. Full of depravity, corruption, paranoia and death.

An entire world has been created for this album (to which i hear there is a follow up, due to be finished by the end of this year! be still my dirty little heart!) of which fans could experience through puzzle piece like secret websites and images.

The most freightening part of the entire thing, if you start to really dig into what this is about, you begin to believe it's true.

I don't expect this album to be liked by very many. Hell, even I wasn't truly hooked on With Teeth when it first came out. It took several tries to finally appreciate it, and now i do. Year Zero on the other hand, i was instantly hooked. I had to listen to it twice in a row. You know that feeling when you're hanging out in the pool with your friends and they all decide to get out but you opt to swim just a little longer? Yeah, listening to it again was like that. It just felt good.

Music Review Vol 1

Scar Symmetry - Pitch Black Progress = **

I've had trouble in the past really appreciating certain metal bands from Europe. typically i can get into one or two songs but never an entire album. Bands like Soilwork, In Flames or Meshuggah. I don't know why either. Scar Symmetry is right along with them, except for a couple of differences. The vocalist - Christian lvestam - is quite simply fucking amazing! From death metal growls, hard core screams and some of the greatest melodies this side of Corey Taylor it's a goddamn wonder how he's able to pull it off. to sum up the rest of their sonic attack: destructive riffs, soaring solos, calculated drums and haunting synths. for the most part, fairly stereotypical with their Stockholm sound, but Christian's vocal acrobatics keep them one step ahead of the game (not to mention his entirely clean singing side project Paradigm Shift fucking rule) and keep me rocking out. Key Tracks - The Illusionist, The Kalediscope God, The Oscilation Point.

HIM - Love Metal = **

I've equated Ville Valo and the boys to the modern day Cure. Back in the day, liking the Cure would get you beat up, but even the guys who would do the thrashing secretly appreciated one or two of the singles. the ambiguous nature of the singing, the heartfelt lyrics and just enough energy in the songs to get your foot tapping. HIM is no different, except this time around HIM can get you laid. Love Metal is not nearly as catchy as Razorblade Romance but has more balls than Darklight. It rocks just hard enough for me to not feel like exchanging it. Key Tracks - The Sacrament, Beyond Redemption and Buried Alive By Love.

Type O Negative - Dead Again = **

Recently, I've heard tell that Peter Steele had found god. As one of the most obvious adversaries to the christian way of life, i found this quite amusing. I also found out that he had gone to rehab. he also seems to have wasted away, no longer looking like the gnarled oak tree rather like a weeping willow. Dead Again however still has the signature sounds of Type O but is a little faster paced than usual. It actually kind of . . . . rocks. Steele's signature deep voice has given way to a higher octave this time around, which i'm a little dissapointed by. At any rate, it's not terrible but I don't highly recommend it either. Key Tracks - Halloween in Heaven, She Burned Me Down, Profit of Doom.

VNV Nation - Matter + Form = ****

Ok so maybe i'm a little biased, but simply put these guys can do no wrong by me. Of the three albums i've heard by these cats, Matter + Form seems to be the most.. . . human. Empires and Futureperfect both give the impression that a higher power is doing the talking. a diety contemplating on his achievements with humanity and what they've done for him in return. Matter + Form however, has the feeling of an average mortal trying to understand where's he's come from and what lies ahead. This can really be attributed to the music only tracks that number greater than their previous outings. It's also a fantastic driving album, fast paced enough if you're in a hurry but soothing enough if you just can't get anywhere (due to the idiotic sons of bitches in front of you who refuse to let off the brake for no goddamed reason!). Key Tracks - Chrome, Endless Skies, Perpetual and Lightwaves
