Whats the magic in the music, and why does it bring us together like this? We all have a longing inside, and it keeps us singing song after song after song...
Sunshine, won't you be my mother
Sunshine, come and help me sing
My heart is darker than these oceans
My heart is frozen underneath
We are crooked souls trying to stay up straight,
Dry eyes in the pouring rain well
The shadow proves the sunshine
The shadow proves the sunshine
To scared that I'll run always
Hold fast to the break of day light were
The shadow proves the sunshine
Oh Lord, why did you forsake me?
Oh Lord, don't be far away away
Storm clouds gathering beside me
Please Lord, don't look the other way
Crooked souls trying to stay up straight
Dry eyes in the pouring rain well
The shadow proves the sunshine
The shadow proves the sunshine
To scared that I'll run always
Hold fast to the break of day light were
The shadow proves the sunshine
The shadow proves the sunshine
Yeah Yeah, shine on me
Yeah Yeah, shine on me
Yeah Yeah, shine on me
Yeah Yeah, shine on me
Crooked souls trying to stay up straight
Dry eyes in the pouring rain well
The shadow proves the sunshine
The shadow proves the sunshine
To scared that I'll run always
Hold fast to the break of day light were
The shadow proves the sunshine
The shadow proves the sunshine
Yeah Yeah, shine on me
Yeah Yeah, shine on me
Yeah Yeah, shine on me
Shine on me,
Shadow proves the sunshine
Me and Joel met with the Dean of Students, Robert Anderson, today, at 11 A.M., after he recieved word from our college representative in the state's Attorney General's office.
Following brief smalltalk, Mr. Anderson basically reaffirmed the position the school had already taken, that is, in order to display our signs, we had to register the time with the college.
Me and Joel made it clear to Mr. Anderson that we were in no means trying to threaten him, but that we were going to continue to hold our signs, per our First Amendment Rights. Joel stated that as Dean of Students, he could do whatever was necessary to fufill his job duties, but we would be in the lounge, demonstrating when we feel necessary, rather then when our registration date says.
Take a close look at the First Amendment, and I garantee you, you will not find anything that states individuals must register in order to utlize First Amendment Rights. This is something that MSTC doesn't seem to understand.
Following this meeting, we retrieved the signs from Joel's car, walked into the lounge, and set up camp. We had the pleasure of having a number of individuals volunteer to hold signs for our cause. All in all, we had about 15 supporters over the course of the next 2-3 hours.
We also had numerous conversations, with both people of both viewpoints. Unfortunately, the majority of those against us restricted their nonsensical arguments to topics that didn't relate, accusations that were unfounded, and attacks on our issues. My favorite quote came from a young woman who said, and I quote "What a stupid issue. It's gay. It's retarded."
How quaint.
As for us, pass through the college lounge this next week, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 11 A.M.-2 P.M. We'll be there wheter the college deems us appropriate or not. It's our right, and we'll use it.
Hope to see you there,
-alex and joel
It must be nice to be a liberal in power. You can make up rules, enforce them only when it suits you, and even get a job at your local community college. Thus, a cute little salary pads your ability to create a liberal utopia of free speech.
As long as the said speech doesn't offend you.
Enter Susan Vickstrom, Administrative Assistant at Fergus Falls Community College. On October 11th, 2006, Mrs. Vickstrom repeatedly violated our first amendment right to free speech, along with the right to demonstrate peacefully.
Joel Weber and myself, both full time students of MSTCT Fergus Falls, set up signs that expressed our opinions on a few political issues, right across from the DFL's table, an external group of activists who had previously set up tables with information about their cause. Our viewpoints happened to clash with the viewpoints of our fellow activists.
Following an hour and a half of peaceful demonstrating, which involved numerous intelligent conversations with students, faculty, and even the DFL members, Sue Vickstrom took the liberty of strolling by. She was noticeably angry after reading our signs, and walked quickly down the hallway, away from our constitutionally protected free speech setup.
A few minutes later, she came back, declaring that we must immediately remove our signs, as we had not registered for the given space. Ironically, the college lounge wasn't nearly half full, a fact that Vickstrom decided was clearly irrelevant. She proceed to remove the signs of her own accord and trotted off down the hallway, signs in tow, knowing full well they were our collective property. She then told us that in order to demonstrate on college grounds, we must register the time through her. Interestingly enough, Vickstrom declared that she rarely scheduled opposing groups at the same time. Therefore, she not only removed all ability to debate an issue, she stated that in order to exercise our right to demonstrate, we had to go through her. Not very helpful, considering she had "duties" to attend to, which she proceeded to scurry off to, leaving us without a voice or an opportunity to gain one.
It must be nice to be a liberal in power.
After this series of events, Joel and I trekked across the college, trying to figure out where to go next. A few helpful members of college faculty then informed us, that there was another office we could visit in order to register for space. Sadly, Vickstrom neglected to mention this.
Then, we went to Kristi Angus, a professor at the college, who just happens to be a lawyer. The three of us proceeded to go over the College Student Regulations Handbook's rules and regulations. Interestingly enough, we found no evidence whatsoever to support Vickstrom's claim.
Finally, our last stop was with Robert Anderson, the Associate Dean of Student Services. Mr. Anderson also looked over the handbook, and after finding nothing to support Vickstrom's case, informed us that he had to make a few calls, and would get back to us on Friday.
All this, over a couple of signs we created and set up in the college lounge. We didn't disturb, intrude, interfere, obstruct, or infringe on anyone or anything, yet we had our right to free speech stripped away, along with our ability to fight back. We'd like to thank the Community College, for their contribution to the slow erosion of our First Amendment Rights.
And we'd also like to say, we're not even close to backing down. Intimidation and scare tactics don't frighten us. In the words of the most famous naval officer of the American Revolution, John Paul Jones, we "have not yet begun to fight." And in the words of our current president...
"Bring it on."
I've tried not to let anyone in until now
I guess conversations never allow
and I've been feeling like I'm on some sort of marry-go-round
And I know, I know, yeah I know, I know and
I've tried not to let anyone in until now
It took time for me to figure it out
and when I feel like I'm complacent with my head in the clouds
And I know, I know, yeah I know, I know
and every time I wonder what's real you make me feel...
You make me feel like a lavender sweater
and I'm caught in that weather
and my ? weighing down
You make me feel like a complete work of art
when I'm just falling apart
A really nice piece of art
Dear God, (art, art, art...)
I hope you hear me (art, art, art...)
And I've tried not to let anyone in until now
Misunderstandings are an easy way out
And I've been feeling all this pressure just to figure it out
And I know, don't know, yeah I know, don't know and
I know if I can stay strong I can make it
and try harder when I just can't take it (can't take it)
And when everything around me feels so broken and jaded (broken and jaded)
And I know, I know, yeah I know, I know
and every time I wonder what's real you make me feel...
You make me feel like a lavender sweater
and I'm caught in that weather
IN MY VOLKSWAGON JETTA
You make me feel like a complete work of art
when I'm just falling apart
A really nice piece of art
(art, art, art...)
It's kinda ?, but it's picking up slowly
I don't know, but I can if you show me
I guess sometimes it takes more than just fake conversations to feel like I know that
It's kinda hard when I'm planning for something
to get across this whole without jumping
I guess sometimes it takes more than just false information to figure out who we are
You make me feel like a lavender sweater
and I'm caught in that weather
IN MY VOLKSWAGON JETTA
You make me feel like a complete work of art
when I'm just falling apart
A really nice piece of art
When you look at me I start to blush
And all that I can see is you and us
Well, baby I'm so free to be in love
WIth you, with you
I wanna be in love with only you
I wanna watch the sky turn grey and blue
I wanna know the cares that always new
I wanna be in love with only you
just you
The stars will fall and dark will light the way
We'll hit the ground and fall into the shade
With you, with you
I wanna be in love with only you
I wanna watch the sky turn grey and blue
I wanna know the cares thats always new
I wanna be in love with only you
I wanna be in love with you
I wanna be in love
I wanna be in love
I wanna be in love with you
I wanna be in love
I wanna be in love
I wanna be in love with you
I wanna be in love with only you
I wanna watch the sky turn grey and blue
I wanna know the cares thats always new
I wanna be in love with only you
Just you, yeah
