I am not one to tell you to shut up and listen. I will not tell you to leave me alone if you are bothering. I will stand there and take every hit that you throw at me without saying a word. And I mean that. But I find my comfort in music, whether I write it or listen to it. I only play a little guitar, and I am bot that great. But I write a ton, and I find that I can be the mst expressive when i am writing on paper. I don't need anyone to talk to that way.
There's the first try.. but for some, it just doens't add up to the second...
These are my reviews for a few bands sophomores.
Evanescence... After a solid, grammy winning debut, Fallen, it took a lot to make the sophomore album, The Open Door. A lot of weight was put on the shoulders of frontwoman, Amy Lee when making it, but she shows no signs of nervousness. On this new one, she still shows more of the same emotion, and deep lyrics that she had on Fallen. With the album's opener "Sweet Sacrifice" to the smoothe melody of "Lithium" to the closer "Good Enough" Lee keeps it constant and never falters. She still knows how to rock, like on "All That I'm Living For" She still knows how to get creative, like on "Lacrymosa" and she still calms herself with even more balads, like "Your Star" So, in the long run, still a great band!
Justin Timberlake... has brought sexy back, and it took him nearly four years to do so. With a huge break since his last album that was dropped in 2002, his new older, more mature album shows his more sexual side. It shows more of his talents too, with not only his voice, but his beats and callaborations too. With the club banging hit "SexyBack" His R&B style slower jam "My Love featuring TI" shows another side as well. His dance hits like "LoveStoned" and this year's "Cry Me A River, "What Comes Around..." It all brings sexy back.
The Killers... They proved themselves as dance rockers with "Somebody Told Me" They made the woman sink with "Mr Brightside" but kept their male fans with the song "All These Things That I Have Done" Now With their secong album, Sam's Town, they come back as grown, but still the same ol' Killers! "When You Were Young" is a n emotional rollercoaster, but great all the way, and tracks shine like "Sam's Town" and "Bling (Confessions Of A King)"
My Chemical Romance... They took a style and made it their own, and now they ar growning with it. (Do you sence a pattern?) And now they are flying with their "Bohemian Rhapsody," "Welcome To The Black Parade" But since their album is not yet released, all I can do now is predict how great it will be. But if it is anything like the first single, it's gonna be big!
You could say that I grew up a little. Graduated from MySpace bands, to PureVolume bands. But all still the same. They all have MySpaces, so I guess it's not all that different. But music is music, and a band is still a band, and that is where this blog comes from. Without them, I'd be channel surfing right now, probably rotting away my brain.
I guess PureVolume has a very sensitive search engine. Or not, however way you look at it. But I was using it to satisfy my craving for Muse, and yet I stumbled across Dangerous Muse. Now at first glance, you don't want to like them at all. Their electricana sound, and the way they express themselves makes you want to quickly turn your head. But let's be a little more openminded, shall we? Yes I was contemplating the fact that they might be gay (just have a gander at some of their pics), but the two guys that make up this band show more originality than I've seen in a while. You can't help but turn the radio up when listening to the moaning, whispering lyrics of the song "Apart" and the heatpounding bass of the song "The Rejection" Whoever you are, and whatever you are doing, you will find this band as a great guilty pleasure. And one that you are not afraid to show.
I constantly curse my junior English teacher for making me read The Great Gatsby, and now it being the only thing that I can think of when I listen to Gatsby's American Dream. It was a good book, but it's not something that I want to think of everytime I listen to great songs like "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale" or "Station 5: The Pearl" But musically, this band is so hard for me to review. Their style, and unique sound is like no other band I can think of. This is indeed a good thing, but it makes it that much more complicated when I am trying to recomend them. But take my word for it, the sounds of Gatsby's American Dream are ones that you will not be dissatisfied in, and great lyrics just add to it.
Let's go on to a band a little less original. Monti Are I are more of your fast-paced emo-rrifc bands. They feature faster songs great for moshing at shows, or just throwing a party. It's the kind of rock that you can dance to. Between The Sheets" includes witty lyrics like "I'm scared, full of fear, but aware and so, you need to know. I don't wanna be your lover, I just wanna be myself, you can hide between the covers and taste the bitterness you've given to me." You sit and find yourself not worthy of reading those great words that were put togther. Even their more seriously taken songs like "In This Legacy" and "Tie Off Your Veins" still have that edgyness that the fast-paced ones do. Including when they invite the horns and a choir into the songs. It makes it all that much better.
There is nothing like a emo band from Portugal called Unfair. Or so it may seem. But is that statement really true? It may seem that way at first listen to their song "Rebellion Poetry" but after a while you start to notice that lead singer, Fabio's vocals are so incredibly irritating. After you listen for a while, their music makes you want to go emo yourself, if you know what I mean. And then, when you go on, with "Crossing Buildings" you realize they all sound the same, and you just want to listen to them less and less, and it's not just the vocals, the instruments of "Conscience Of Alucination" are just as bad.
I love hippies. And if the hippie era was still as big as it was, and they made a baby with an indie rocker, you would get We Are Lions. Pure greatness? The catchiness of the songs allows you to sing along, and I imagine they are a blast to see at a show, but as for origianilty. It just seems like they can't figure out who they want to be, Taking Back Sunday or The Killers. But still, the hippie lyrics of "Lovers And Fighters" are just classic, and that is why I cannot ignore these guys.
It seems like Seattle can never go wrong. First they give birth to the grunge scene with Nirvana and Pearl Jam, and now they are taking another turn with the post hardcore sounds of Aiden and On The Last Day. But, even with the similarities of these bands, they still have their differences. With "Meaning In The Static" being like an identical twin to Aiden's "Die Romantic," you still will find yourself not being able to get enough. And as they even slow it down with "Storm Covered Ceilings" you still will find yourself with a headrush.
Now let's go to some locals. Straight out of Columbus, Ohio, Philo and Sighlo show great passions for the same thing. Yes these are indeed two different bands, but still seem to be brother bands. Sighlo brings the heartfelt lyrics of "Go Back" with "Holding my head up, deserving so low." (What great words, eh?) while Philo brings the great raspy voice and experimental music that comes with their song "Television Resperator" So, whoever knew it took two things to make one thing perfect.
New London Fire, you can tell, could've been a great Beatles cover band. With their songs like "Different" and "When I Try" they bring great style and lyrics like, "While the worst she can confess, but the thoughts have left her mind." Not entirely great enough to be The Beatles, but they still have a lot of the same traits that they had. Still, New London Fire far from dissatisfies.
There's Highland. This band is particularly harder to review, maybe because they are in Toledo, Ohio as we speak, they graduated from my high school, and I've waited on the legendary Jake (who does the vocals) at Arby's once. But I cannot let that sway this. The are quite great, easy listening with a punk sound. The vocals do sound quite familiar though, like I'm listening to the Smashing Pumpkins, but they are still fun to rock to with songs like "Love This Memory," "Count The Stars," and "Irony Of Eminence." The drawback? I can't help but laugh at their more serious attempts, like on their ballad song, "Ode To Ellis." But solid try... really!
Next is the band that I found in my friends request box about a week after I even started my account, LAO. A little farthur away from easy listening, but still great. Fans of bands like Hawthone Heights will find comparisons, but once you begin to call yourself a LAO fan, those comparisons all fade away. All the way from Nashville, this band has found themselves touring from Florida to Texas to California, so they must be doing something right. And no one can help from singing along with their very catchy songs like "Throwing Stones" and "Tornadoes On Our Breath" How anyone came up with great lyrics like that, I'll never know.
This next band, The Riverboat Gamblers, I admit, I did not find on myspace first. I read about them in RollingStone, and went searching. Call me a nerd, you know you want to. But after finding them, I'm sorry I didn't find them sooner. The thing to remember about the band is that it seems they are only here to have a bit of fun, and not to be taken seriously at all. So don't do it! One of their deeply funniest songs on their album, To The Confusion Of Our Enemies, is a 30 secong clip of Freddy Castro singing high pitch about a unicorn. Maybe he was squeezing his balls a little too tightly while in the studio, but it made a little humerous track. But sadly, it will not be found on myspace, but it's kinda worth the 99cents to get it on iTunes.
With Flee The Seen, it's quite a different way of going. I find myelf loving them one day, hating them the next. The male and female vocalists lead to a great combination, but only when they sing together. The "magic" (if you will) is gone when they go separate ways. The track to listen to would have to be "I'll Be Back On Sunday" where the two overlap continuously with entertaining lyrics like "Cancel my funeral, push back the soil, wipe the tears away, take back the words you said! Oh Preacher, I'm not dead!" But sadly, the other songs just don't have the same effect, which leads them to be only good for the one.
Oh how do I even start with Serena Maneesh? Quite the different band, but I can say surprisingly entertaining. Like most wierd bands, The Smashing Pumpkins, (why do I keep refering to them today?), Radiohead, or Courtney Love's band Hole, Serena Maneesh, straight from Oslo, Norway, can only be listened to if the mood is right. And what's else, thier gothic psychedelic sound is great for Halloween parties.
Aww. Sweet little Fairwell from St Louis, Missouri. Sounding much like Yellowcard and The Ataris, this band is great for your late summer nights of speeding down the highway watching the sunset with thier song "Threat Or A Promise" blaring. Enough said!
Last, but I cannot say that they are least in the littlest of ways. I am a great fan of WE ARE THE FURY (spelled just like that, in all caps) and I am truly rooting for this band. You can't but dance along with their great "Better Off This Way" putting other dance rock pros like Franz Ferdinand, Modest Mouse, and Panic! At The Disco into so much shame. I can't say that it's because they are also Toledo natives, but they just have what it takes to get any party going. They are just such a fun and heart pounding band.
