Sound was created by God. All noises come from His creation, or from things that were directly or indirectly made by Him. Music is its own level of noise, of sound. Music is an expression of who we are, where we've been, what we feel, and what we love. Simply by playing music, an artist gives some extent of glory to God, since God was the one that gave the musical artist the talent and inspiration. By listening to music, we honor God by showing our appreciation for this gift.

Personally, I usually listen to music containing lyrics that directly worship God. Some are praise songs, some are prayers, some tell others about Him, and some reflect His presence in our lives. Some call out His name, and others don't, but the songs are always pleasing to His ear. I also enjoy secular music, but I generally think that as long as I'm listening to something, it should be something that keeps my heart in the right place and that fully glorifies God.
It doesn't matter the style of the music, it is all beautiful. From classical to swing to punk, all music is a wonderful thing. Everyone has their own styles. Mine is hard rock and alternative rock. Yours is whatever moves you.

Music is an expression of who we are, and that is what makes it so precious.

CD Stories

I love compilation CD's because they generally have the best music from a certain artist. However, the one thing that a greatest hits album doesn't have is a story. Every main release from an artist tells some type of story. Usually, it will relate to the band's personal lives at the time they wrote the lyrics and recorded the album. Other times, it will focus on important issues in this world that the band finds particularly important. For example, "For the Love of the Game" by Pillar is all about faith in action and making an impact in this world. Skillet's "Comatose" is about making it through rough times. "Jesus Freak" is speaks of being set apart from the world. Flyleaf's self-entitled debut release focuses on the beauty of redemption and God's unconditional love. Of course, it is much less evident in some CD's than in others. And not every song in the album follows that theme - it may be as few as three, it just depends on the artist. I encourage those of you who have never considered this before to listen carefully to the lyrics of one of your favorite CD's (perhaps several times few) in search for a theme. Once you see the story that a CD tells, you might be able to see some of the individual songs in a new way.

Reinvention

I have found that many of my favorite bands are ones that continually reinvent themselves. Each album has a different sound than the one before it. Of course, the vast majority of bands have albums that each have a different feel from the others. I'm talking about a more dramatic change, where the entire style actually changes. For example, Pillar starts with rap, changes to hard rock, then moves toward almost a punk rock style. Dead Poetic started as a screamo band, later released an alternative punk album, and most recently recorded within the hard rock genre. For one thing, it's neat just to see how bands such as these span multiple genres, yet continue to hold some aspect of their sound that defines them, something that separates them from other artists. It's good that they are constantly looking for a way to improve, and to find a sound that works best for them. I enjoy listening to these bands as they make these journeys to define themselves.

Spoken To

God speaks to me in many different ways, but I find that He uses music quite often to send me a message. Usually, it pertains to my life at the moment, but sometimes its about my relationship with Him in general. Many times, I'll hear lyrics to a song (I've probably heard it 37 times in that past month alone, but for some reason it will hit me differently at some point) at realize that I how I can take this personally. It's definitely not limited to Christian music of course. I might be listening to a secular love song, and I'll hear something; it would be as if God was saying "This is a glimpse of how I love you" of "I want you to love Me/others in this way." Of course, that is just one example. I won't go much more into it right now, but I thought I might try to inspire whoever reads this to start listening to lyrics on a whole different level.
