Ah, era muy coqueta aquella flor! Su misteriosa preparacin duraba das y das. Hasta que una maana, precisamente al salir el sol se mostr esplndida.
La flor, que haba trabajado con tanta precisin, dijo bostezando:
-Ah, perdname apenas acabo de despertarme estoy toda despeinada!
El principito no pudo contener su admiracin:
-Qu hermosa eres!
-Verdad? -respondi dulcemente la flor-. He nacido al mismo tiempo que el sol.
El principito advirti que no era demasiado modesta, pero era tan conmovedora!
-Me parece que ya es hora de desayunar - aadi la flor -; si tuvieras la bondad de pensar un poco en m...
Y el principito, muy confuso, habiendo ido a buscar una regadera la roci abundantemente con agua fresca.
Y as, ella lo haba atormentado con su vanidad un poco sombra. Un da, por ejemplo, hablando de sus cuatro espinas, dijo al principito:
-Ya pueden venir los tigres, con sus garras!
-No hay tigres en mi planeta -observ el principito- y, adems, los tigres no comen hierba.
-Yo nos soy una hierba -respondi dulcemente la flor.
-Perdname...
-No temo a los tigres, pero tengo miedo a las corrientes de aire. No tendrs un biombo?
"Miedo a las corrientes de aire no es una suerte para una planta" -pens el principito-. "Esta flor es demasiado complicada"
-Por la noche me cubrirs con un fanal hace mucho fro en tu tierra. No se est muy a gusto; all de donde yo vengo
La flor se interrumpi; haba llegado all en forma de semilla y no era posible que conociera otros mundos. Humillada por haberse dejado sorprender inventando un mentira tan ingenua, tosi dos o tres veces para atraerse la simpata del principito.
-Y el biombo?
-Iba a buscarlo, pero como no dejabas de hablarme
Insisti en su tos para darle al menos remordimientos.
De esta manera el principito, a pesar de la buena voluntad de su amor, haba llegado a dudar de ella. Haba tomado en serio palabras sin importancia y se senta desgraciado.
"Yo no deba hacerle caso -me confes un da el principito- nunca hay que hacer caso a las flores, basta con mirarlas y olerlas. Mi flor embalsamaba el planeta, pero yo no saba gozar con eso Aquella historia de garra y tigres que tanto me molest, hubiera debido enternecerme".
Y me cont todava:
"No supe comprender nada entonces! Deb juzgarla por sus actos y no por sus palabras. Me perfumaba y me iluminaba la vida. No debi haber hudo jams! No supe adivinar la ternura que ocultaban sus pobres astucias! Son tan contradictorias las flores! Pero yo era demasiado joven para saber amarla".
