What better way to spend time with your kids while educating them than doing family tree projects? You will get to learn about relatives you did not even know you had All while teaching your children about your family as well.


This is a great way to learn where exactly you come from. Find out what your heritage is for yourself, rather than hearing about it from someone else. You might find out you are related to a famous explorer, royalty, or another famous person in history. Talk to your elder relatives. Not only will they have a first hand account of the past, but you may be surprised at the stories and memories they have to share. It is a great way to connect with them, and they will love it probably even more than you do!


There are plenty of resources out there nowadays. Making a family tree has become a very popular hobby, and the internet has responded and exploded with websites. There are a number of sites dedicated to helping with your research. Most websites require a monthly fee, but offer a free trial, or limited research for free.


These websites are able to make connections faster. They are also able to piece together information to find a common ancestor between you and other people across the world. There could be other relatives spread out across the globe that you didn't even know existed.


Trying to find every relative may prove a bit frustrating. Try to document the known relatives first. Also expect to run into some dead ends. Not all records have survived through the ages. Considering all the floods and fires, it is a surprise than any document survived. It is through the care of those that guard the past that these documents exist today.


Family researchers often times are also interested in creating scrapbooks. Both hobbies have the similarity of wanting to document events and people in the past. The hobbies really do go hand in hand. There are a number of ideas from the world of scrapbooks that can add some fun and flavor to your genealogy project.


This is a fantastic project for one or many. Getting family involved in this project can be a great bonding experience. Even making it into a game or competition could be a fun time. Try to see who can locate the most relatives or discover the most unique ancestor. Share what you find with your friends and family. Your friends might even be interested in starting their own project.


No matter how you document it, nor how long it takes you, family tree projects bring people together all over the world. Do not try to take on too much at once though. Start simply with the side of the family you know most about, so you have more places to look. Then try the other side, after you get the hang of it. What a great memory to leave for your children and relatives!
