Life on Standby formed in September, 2004 in Tempe, AZ. In less than six months we were playing shows in different local clubs, some of which being The Mason Jar, The Clubhouse, Big Fish Pub, The Trunk Space, etc. After only a few months of playing in clubs we gained a consistent crowd of 40-50 people each night. With the money earned from these shows we immediately went into the studio to record the 4-song EP, In Empty Rooms. Since then we have continually played shows to promote us and our CD.
Having played together in a previous project, Matt Porter (Guitars), and Kurt Menger (Drums) already had strong musical ties. With the addition of lead vocalist Kip Parcell, and Andrew Bejarano (Bass)the music began to take a very unique direction. With influences such as Deftones, Tool, Nine Inch Nails, and Incubus, the alternative metal style we have created is something we have found to be very difficult to describe. In searching for a word to describe our style of music we have only found one, METALTERNATIVE!!
Matt Porter (age 22) started playing guitar when he was 13 years old. He grew up in Show Low, Arizona, where there is little else to do but play music. In 1999 Matt met Kurt Menger while attending Show Low High School. Kurt, having played in many marching drum corps, and also taking weekly lessons for his rudimental skills, was ready to try something a little more involved. They immediately formed the metal band Syphon and began what is now a 5 year musical relationship. Having put high school behind them, the two of them were ready to form something creative. After playing together for almost a year, the band took a break to get their lives in order. When they were finally ready to start again they decided they wanted something new and exciting. With a new style and energy the band was looking for someone to fill the empty spot of lead vocalist. They found the answer in their own garage. Long-time friend Kip Parcell had no experience singing when he entered the band, but he took to the stage with the confidence of a veteran stage performer. With the final piece in place the band began the writing process. In a matter of months they had enough songs in place to begin playing shows, and thats exactly what they did. And with the addition of Andrew Bejerano, the new bassist of Life on Standby, their stage presence and sound is really coming together.
