The band John Stuart Mill
John Stuart Mill is an alternative rock band from Eastern Europe, from Estonia. Founded in a small town named Parnu, it has had members all over Estonia but as they themselves claim to have members in London too. That is if we count the utilitarian philosopher John Stuart Mill as a member of the band.
About the line-ups
John Stuart Mills first line-up started playing together in January 2005. Actually from the first line-up no other members are still performing in the band, except Matt Samuel Berlioz (vocals). Even John Stuart Mill was added as a member later than the first line-up started to play. This (in March 2007) is the bands 10th (!) line-up. No members of the band have played longer than a year, except guitarist Albert Marginal (also Albmerty Maginal), member from June 2005. Some very different kinds of musicians during this time have co-worked with the band, and all of them have given their unique ideas and concepts to the music and entity, that the band has generated for itself.
About the conception
The band is strongly propagating its own attitude in making and performing music. The band has generated a glamorous entity for itself, which includes for example strange pseudonyms for all the members and people related to the band (Marie Arouet, Frank Costello, Oliviere St Obrg are just few examples).
The band also claims to have played every year in 20th May in London on John Stuart Mills birthday. And they also claim to have John Stuart Mill as their band member.
John Stuart Mill is also known as the band that is propagating DIY culture. It recorded its first album in a former members Holger Volk Petersons garage. The album was only available in the internet for free download.
All the legend which contains glamorous artist names, DIY culture propaganda and other things - all this makes the band more like a performance group which uses music for and in their actions. As the band itself claims, the creation exists separate from the band and members, so the idea can be used by anybody and anyone any time and place that is the reason for often exchanges in the line-ups which have not disturbed the bands existence and advancement.
About the lyrics
Another thing is that John Stuart Mill is performing songs written by unknown poets as Marie Arouet (actually a well-known Estonian indie band member hiding behind this pseudonym) and Herbert Roogmaa, but also using lyrics written by famous Estonian poets as Artur Alliksaar, Milvi Sepping, Viivi Luik. The band also has one song, which was written by a famous Russian poet Boriss Slutsky. The lyrics were taken from the Anthology of Soviet Poetry, published in 1965. Very important is to notice, that John Stuart Mill is performing lyrics only in Estonian.
About the genre
John Stuart Mill considers itself not to be a part of any specific genres, so that the band could create music for music itself and doesnt have to be responsible for the genres limitations. That does not mean that band has no musical conception at all. John Stuart Mill expresses the old school and maybe low-fi sound, comparing to the modern styles in music. The bands musical pattern consists of sounds of pure amplifiers and has found their own space. Simple and roughly played melodies and reluctant attitude leads the way to the bands relationship with punk scene.
