Joe Cassady was born in a western mining town long since stripped of its natural deposits of silver and gold and perhaps, more appropriately than ever before, named Leadville, Colorado. Coming of age and desiring the glory of what had been lost, but lacking any formal knowledge of alchemical principles, Cassady packed his bags and a battered acoustic guitar and headed east. It took a little kicking around but one day, finding himself in a bar (Doc Holiday's to be preciseâironically named after Leadville's most famous resident) on Avenue A in Manhattan's Lower East Side, Cassady, for the first time in ages, felt at home. Hearing his own musical influences like Kris Kristofferson and Townes Van Zandt being played on the juke-box right alongside others like the Velvet Underground and Bob Dylan, he realized that the silver and gold in the body piercings of the East Village hipsters singing along with him to the songs of Johnny Cash, Tom Waits, and Kurt Cobain, could well be the same stuff once mined from the proud mountais of his youth. Cassady has spent the years since carving out a place for himself as a respected songwriter and powerful performer on the New York club scene and beyond.
Cassady's music takes a variation on traditional folk/rock/blues style, injects it with lyrics that wouldn't look out of place in a collection of Beat poetry, and exudes a delicate honesty as often as a bluesy, rock & roll restlessness. Solo Cassady can mesmerize like the best performing songwriters and with his band, The West End Sound, rocks in a style that is wholly rooted in the past, yet definitely has a place in the sonic spectrum of the future.
