"My First Love" is based on Revelation 2, Isaiah 1, and Psalm 51. This song follows God's letter to the Ephesian Church - in that they had DONE everything right, but God had one thing against them: they had left their first love. God's message through Isaiah to the Israelites is along the same lines. They offered all the sacrifices and offerings God commanded of them, yet their hearts were not broken before Him. God demands repentance, promising to wash them clean. David's response in a similar scenario is to beg God to cleanse him, renew a right spirit in him, and restore to him the joy of salvation. I find it so easy to go through the motions of the Christian life, and my heart not be fully in tune, and broken. This song is a challenge to me to return to my first love - the one who knew me from BEFORE the beginning, created me, redeemed me, and repeatedly calls me back to himself.

Nearer Still Nearer with As the Deer - Instrumental Arrangement (demo recording)

Nearer Still Nearer is one of my favorite hymns. It combines a beautiful melody with heart-crying lyrics. As I wrote this arrangement and voiced the instruments, I envisioned being drawn closer to my Savior, yearning to be in His presence. Hopefully the melodic voices and new harmonies will dramatize this great text and give you a desire to be drawn closer to Him, just like a deer who pants after the water.

"He Gives me a Song in the Night"

Last night I could not get to sleep....so I laid in bed and had some 'God and I' time, and then just started praying as God laid things/people on my heart. After a few hours, I still was not able to sleep (now I know why)!! Being home alone, I decided to sit down at the piano since that was something I couldn't normally do in the middle of the night :). Recently, I printed a number of hymn texts that I was interested in writing new melodies for, although, I was having trouble coming up with anything worthwhile. As I sat down, immediately, God gave me a melody and harmonic structure and it fit perfectly with the hymn "Abide With Me". The natural minor mode melody brings new meaning to the text, approaching it from more of a desperate and needy point of view. Through the text and melody, God challenged me that He is all I need, and because He will abide with me I have no reason to fear or worry. I love the closing stanza "Hold Your cross before my closing eyes; Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies. Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee; in life, in death, O Lord, abide with me."

More songs to come!!! Over this summer I have written several more songs and can't wait to get them all recorded hopefully this fall!!!

Through the truth of my favorite Psalm - Psalm 62- God has challenged me to just be quiet and rest in His sovereignty. My hope MUST be in Him. I love verse 8, where David begs us because of his personal experience to pour out our heart before God; He alone is our refuge! It is so comforting to know that not only is God an all-powerful and sovereign God, He is also a personal, caring, and unconditional loving God. "Only You" soon to come!
