Bluesy. Jazzy. Folky.
Many words have been used to describe Jim Phillips' music. None of them seem to fit entirely. Inspired by musicians spanning the lengths of the genre spectrum, Jim Phillips continues to blend styles and bend rules with his own take on blues, jazz, and folk music.
More music to come, keep checking back!

I have finally gotten that new computer that I was talking about in my last post. I'm working on recording a few new songs at the moment. They will be up as soon as they are finished.
Until then, feel free to check out my:

...ok.
update: my computer is a huge hunk of scrap metal, so i will not be posting any new material until i get a new computer.
if you would like to speed up that process, feel free to send a check (payable to Jim Phillips) to my house. Email me for my address. $849.99 is the preferred donation amount, although every little bit counts.
in addition, i'm trying something new. Every piece of paper money that passes through my hands will be labelled with the url for this site. If one of these bills has led you here, that is so totally rad. Leave me a comment or an email or an instant message and let me know that YOU got HERE by buying something and getting change. Or selling something.
Preferably your body on a corner.
until next time...

After quite a hiatus, I have returned with a new guitar solo-oriented song with vocalized beatboxing.
Yes, you read that correctly. Vocalized beatboxing.
Anyhow, enjoy. Let me know what you think, good or bad. I'm always looking for feedback.
Until next time...

Inspired by popular opinion, I re-mastered "Grand Dark Feeling of Emptiness."
Remember, the link to my AIM screenname is at the bottom of this page. FEEDBACK is always APPRECIATED. Positive OR negative. As a writer and a musician, I understand that revision is essential and audience input is necessary for revision. I welcome constructive criticism, although don't just IM me to say "you can't sing," or, "your music sucks." I know these things. Constructive criticism is comments like "the volume on the lead guitar track is a bit loud" or "the megaphone vocal track takes away from the serenity of the first verse" or something like that. If you're going to tell me WHY you don't like it, be prepared to tell me HOW to fix it and WHAT I can do to make it better.
www.purevolume.com/natemeadows is a good friend of mine. Be sure to check out the beginnings of his electronic project and look forward to a full-length collaboration between us. I will forego my folk roots for the time being and you can expect the final product to be somewhere between SunnO))), The Faint, and Bright Eyes' Digital Ash album.
In the meantime, feel free to use the link to my email address to drop suggestions for cover songs. I'm not a very good lyricist, so I tend to cover songs with lyrics and write either instrumental pieces or pieces with a few short, strong lines and endless waves of powerful music...or not so powerful. It's all a matter of perspective.
Also be sure to check out www.purevolume.com/leahhutchins. Her crappy recording device prevents high sound quality, but her voice speaks (sings?) for itself. Sooner or later, I will show her how to connect her 8-track to her computer to transfer master tracks, but until then, take what you can get and feel honored, people, because this girl will be on VH1 Storytellers within the next 10 years. I promise.
And that's that for now. Until next time...

Forgive me father, for I have sinned.
I have taken severe artistic license and exercised it upon a good song.
What came out the other end is nothing like the original.
It's notably more sinister.
I like it.
Until next time...
