In early 2004, a quartet of distinctive talents joined to become Jade of Days; one of the most promising bands in the San Jose bay area. Originally, the band consisted of guitarist Paul Borges, formerly of San Jose's own Divided, vocalist Dana Kelley, bassist Nelson Medeiros, and drummer Pat Ruiz, formerly of Salmon. Jade of Days released their first full length album In the Absence of Light in summer 2005. In early 2006 after parting ways with Ruiz, the band permanently recruited Zodiac drummer Junior Medeiros, and the new foursome combined their individual techniques, creating an undeniable chemistry. Danaâs emotional melodies and vocal range enhance the bands intricate sound, while Paul and Nelson utilize the uncommon technique of rhythmic tapping to create an original and highly regarded style. The experience is complete with Juniorâs limitless variations and technical grooves. In summer 2006, they released their much anticipated and experimental second full length album Gracas a Deus. Jade of Days combines alternative and progressive rock, while maintaining the catchy appeal of modern pop. Their performances captivate audiences throughout the Bay Area, solidifying their role as an unforgettable force in the local music scene. In late 2007, original bassist Nelson Medeiros exited the band to pursue other projects, and the group sought out long time friend and veteran bassist Nelson Candido, formerly of Divided and Friends of Enemies. In 2007, Jade of Days was selected as the opening act in Channel 104.9's Day on the Meadow, sharing the stage with KungFu Vampire, Medina Lake, DJ Scotty Boy, Fountains of Wayne, and They Might Be Giants.
In summer 2008, the band joined the San Jose chapter of the Your Music Magazine Olympicks, a multi-month competition spanning the Bay Area where singer Kelley took Gold in the Vocalist Competition. The band earned first place in the preliminary round of the competition before withdrawing due to medical reasons. Shortly after in fall 2008, original guitarist Paul Borges unfortunately separated from Jade of Days. Although the style and technique of Borges' work is significant to the band's sound, the band recruited original bassist Nelson Medeiros to return as lead guitarist. Jade of Days also recruited veteran Zodiac keyboardist Sandro Costa. The new quintet plans to maintain the signature sound of Jade of Days while it moves in a new and exciting direction that is sure to not only entertain, but to surprise listeners. The band is now working on new material with the plans of releasing an EP in the near future.
What can you expect when listening to Jade of Days? To quote Ryan Osterbeck, staff writer for the Silicon Valley Metro, "the sound is clean, amazingly harmonized and spans musical styles ranging from hard-hitting punk-inspired choruses to driving rock solos to intelligent alt-indie numbers that meld into a sound rarely heard these days." [Metro Nov 15-21, 2006]
Or simpler said, "driving, intense rock with gorgeous vocal work." [Metro Jan 10-16, 2007]
"Jade of Days just may be on the cusp..." [Metro Feb 28-Mar 6, 2007]
Michael Magic from Bay Area Back Stage:
"Jade of Days - Female fronted band with Musical Hooks = Strong Vocals. Unique Quirky Taps from Bass and Guitar, a Rhythm section that holds it down for the Guitarist to Coax Robert Fripp sounding leads, from a San Jose veteran Guitar Slinger in the pocket."
9/2/08. Ess-ON or ESS-SUN here. Here's what i woulda wrote on an article: "JOD and it's lead, Dana Kelley haven't missed a beat after a one year hiatus from the local music scene. Not only did their performance rock the Downtown Brit, but they christened their new Bassist Nelson 2. With Paul's beefed up pedal board and trance guitar riffs, and the miraculous return of its prodigal drummer Jr. Medeiros, JOD took home 1 Overall of the votes at this year's Your Music Olympics. Go Gang. Go! Don't stop believin'!"
