A commentary on the "International Conference to Review the Global Vision of the Holocaust"
By Steve Moore
History generally refers to actual events that happened in the past. It is
typically recorded in written documents, although there are other mediums.
Most people acknowledge that the majority of heavily documented
events did in fact happen, to one degree or another. Ideologies and interpretations vary widely, of course. For example, most people believe that John F Kennedy was shot. It is highly documented and easy to prove thanks to the many witnesses, medical documents, and the Super 8 mm film of the event caught by Abraham Zapruder. The motivations behind the assasination, the debatable conspiracy theories, the guilt of
Lee Harvey Oswald - these are all open to discussion and this
discussion/argument is recognized as part of a functional democracy.
However, it takes a different kind of person to believe, for example, that
Elvis is alive. This would require believing a fact not only with no evidence
to support it, but with a wealth of evidence to dispute it. Someone believing this to be true would either be incredibly stupid, or possibly have a mental disorder/disease to facilitate the irrational belief.
And we can liken these types of people with Holocaust deniers. Of course, just add hate. Since the Holocaust is not only highly documented, but the sheer amount of deaths is unfathomable, it simply cannot be missed by anyone. 6 million Jews died in the Holocaust, between 1.1 and 1.6 at Auschwitz alone. Millions of other people died as well. It takes a thick skull to ignore even the pre-war census, which was an underestimation in itself. There are lists of victim's names. Concentration and labor camps
can be toured. So what can we chalk up this spreading belief to?
A full embrace of stupidity is evident once the idea is entertained. To fully absorb anti-semetic beliefs, however, another helping hand is sometimes needed. This can be in the form of mental disorders such as literal interpretation of religion or religious prophecy. In many Muslim countries, the Holocaust is completely ommited from school curriculums, according to Aayan Hirsi Ali. She adds "Worse, most of us are groomed to wish for a Holocaust of Jews."
The reasons for the perpetuation of anti-semetic beliefs are dogmatic and
without any sane basis so they do not warrant further discussion. They can be likened to the simpleton belief structures of the KKK and their unjustified hatred towards Black Americans, a group of people merely asking for equal rights after years of slavery and torture. The Ku Klux Klan's membership has been whittled down to a few thousand in recent years (possibly the same people who
believe Elvis is alive).
Now there are plenty of groups of people whose beliefs, to most of us, are
simply implausible. There are the Raelians, the Scientologists, the
Unification Church, and many more that you can probably subscribe to on
their official websites (You can now even register for the Ku Klux Klan
online if you are so inclined. This proves that they now have thumbs and can use computers.)
The main issue with anti-semitism (and the KKK) is that, besides the fact
that it is baseless much like many of our political and religious belief
systems, it is deeply harmful. Within the realm of people who adopt
anti-semetic beliefs, a small faction of them will strive to act on these
violent ideas. Sign Iranian President Mahmoud Abmadinejad up for the latter.
On the 2nd day of the conference, Abmadinejad referenced the destruction of Israel once again saying "The Zionist regime will be wiped out the same way the Soviet Union was, and humanity will achieve freedom." Well, it looks like someone has finally found the answer to humanity's woes. Just blow up Israel. It's that simple.
Never mind keeping a tight leash on the press in your own country.
Never mind fully controlling the internet as well.
Never mind detention and torture as a means to silence dissidents for pointing out the obvious.
Never mind the lack of women's rights.
"Humanity will achieve freedom?"
Simple words from a simple man.
The conference opened on Dec 11 in Tehran, Iran. At the conference as well were former KKK Imperial Wizard David Duke, disgraced author Fredrick Toben, Robert Faurisson, even Rabbis Yisroel Dovid Weiss and Moshe Arye Friedman of Neteuri Karta. The now
ridiculed Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said the conference
sought "neither to deny nor prove the Holocaust but to provide an
appropriate scientific atmosphere for scholars to offer their opinions in
freedom about a historical issue." Apparently David Duke is a "scholar." The shameful Rabbis in attendance are "scholars". Robert Faurission is a
"scholar".
Maybe if I abandon reality, ignore history, and come to ridiculous conclusions about the fates of people I never knew and will never have any right to speak for, I can be a scholar too.
