HYDRA FX

Rock / Experimental / Ska

Tired of swimming in a sea of modern punk and depression rock that dominated the Southern Maryland peninsula, four restless fellas decided to form a musical tidal wave of their own. Borrowing from the positive vibes surrounding the island-like shores of the Chesapeake Bay, the boys mixed up their own original batch of reggae, rock, funk, metal, and jazz. HydraFXs sound is well blended and smooth, yet hard-hitting and full of positive energy.

The roots of HydraFX (HFX) were laid when the Barrick Brothers, Joe and Greg, began playing music together in early 1995. These two young musicians teamed up with friend Aaron Barchers, former bassist of local bands Beltane and Sinyster, and began to develop their own flavor of musical stylings. They picked up a front-man and started to play small gigs around Southern Maryland. They discovered a sound that left audiences begging for more. In November 2000, HFX entered a local music competition at Nations in Washington, D.C., where they took 2nd place out of 30 bands. This foundation could only get better.

In the summer of 2002, the band heard about a battle of the bands that was being hosted by Catamarans, a local bar. The band decided to once again put their music out for critique. Due to illness, the band was forced to perform without their lead vocalist. While improvising their performance, a stranger decided to jump on stage and began free-styling to their music. Kevin Quinn was the guys name, and he naturally fit right into the band. The crowd loved it, and HFX placed 3rd out of 14 bands. The seeds of a new line-up had been planted.

Kevin was invited to jam with HFX on several occasions, and as an aspiring young musician began writing some new material for the band. Kevins jazzy sax style and raspy vocals comp-limented the reggae/rock style the guys had laid structure to. The four picked up friend Troy Dubb on rhythm guitar, and decided to take their new arsenal of material to KMH Recording Studio, and laid down a 5-track demo in August of 2002. Confident that they were on to something big, they decided to devote more time to playing local gigs, which have earned them a good reputation and devoted fan-base in their area.

The group decided to stay hard at work in the studio with one goal- the creation of their debut album Universal Harmony. Before the completion of this project, the band was forced to change their line-up once again when bassist Aaron and guitarist Troy both decided to pursue other musical interests. This did not eliminate the determination to achieve what they had set out to accomplish. Pete Deeney, a friend of the band filled in for local gigs before the band picked up current bass player Sean Reese, former member of local bands FlipSwitch and ShallowDeep. They are still on the local scene and their CD is currently available for purchase. Their new & improved website, www.HydraFX.com is up and running, which is full of information and includes an active message board for fans. Their style is fresh and can only get better from here.
