Heidi Saperstein rode into the new millennium as a solo performer, having spent the previous decade in bands whose makeup was predominantly female before such aggregations became commonplace. Five of those latter years were spent in Shiva Speedway playing shows with the likes of Sleater-Kinney, Girls Against Boys, Skeleton Key, and Bikini Kill among others. Heidi's original guitar contribution to this edgy rock band blossomed into additional duties as its songwriter and featured singer. Their album Psychic City came out in 1999 on Rainbow Quartz Records. Upon release of her critically acclaimed new record, Zara, Heidi will be touring with a full band that includes Mike Oor on guitar (formerly of Runner and the Thermodynamics). Her truly distinctive voice ranges from a haunting lower register to beautiful, airy high notes bringing a fresh brand of indie rock to an even higher level. The songs on Zara, although definitely accessible, possess a darkness and improbability that steers Saperstein well clear of the mainstream. The arrangements are lush, yet often eerie and idiosyncratic â far too interesting to be mere background music for a beautiful voice. Both a challenge and an embrace, the music of Heidi Saperstein is never less than enthralling.
