Heartbreak Club are rapidly becoming Australia's beacon of hope for Geek Rock; spearheading a new wave of 1990's inspired intelligent, ironic and self-deprecating punk-infused tunes.
In doing so, HBC have recorded a new, darker, grittier and black-humoured album that remains unapologetically catchy, whilst adopting a more honest, confessional and grungier tone than previous efforts. (The band goes on to note the influence of Weezer's 'Pinkerton', Regurgitator's 'Unit', Nirvana's 'In Utero' and They Might Be Giants' 'Flood' on the new material, as well as contemporaries such as MGMT and Silversun Pickups!)
US Producer Ed Rose (Motion City Soundtrack, The Get Up Kids) and Aussie engineer Matt Voigt (The Killers, Midnight Oil, The Living End) were locked in Melbourne's Sing Sing Studios for a month with HBC recording the new album, titled 'Our Horse Is Dead'.
The album's quirky first track 'Are You Leaving Me?' has been embraced by radio with Triple J's 'Short.Fast.Loud', Nova (nights) and Triple M (nights) all playing the track.
April 2010 - HBC are finalists in the International Songwriting Competition, competing in the rock category against notable artists such as The Living End, Eskimo Joe, and Children Collide. The ISC is being judged my luminaries such as Kings of Leon, Robert Smith (The Cure), Rob Thomas (Matchbox 20), and Black Francis (The Pixies).
Continual live performances have seen HBC play alongside Bluejuice, Philadelphia Grand Jury, Town Hall Steps, Behind Crimson Eyes and more in festival and support capacities in the past month. HBC have also been performing many of their own headlining shows along the Australian East Coast, particularly in their hometowns of Sydney, Melbourne and Newcastle (although the members are all originally from Newcastle, they are now spread out).
Since forming in early 2006, Heartbreak Club have extensively toured Australia and the USA; had their debut EP '...lamecore' played on 300+ college and specialty-commercial radio stations in the USA, Australia and Canada; had Bethanie featured on ABC-TV's Rage; and played alongside Faker, The Sleepy Jackson, Jonah Matranga, Bodyjar and Karnivool.
In early 2008, HBC had bunkered down with Ed Rose to belt out O Tempora! O Mores! which was recorded hot on the heels of HBC's first tour of the USA (HBC met with Ed whilst on tour in the US). That EP combined chunky riffs, sing-along choruses and punchy synth lines to create a veritable bevy of audible delicacies that drip with irony and are coated with sincerity; enticing fans of Weezer, Motion City Soundtrack, The Pixies and The Get Up Kids.
HBC were formed in early 2006, after spending two days and $500 recording the '...lamecore' EP 'for a bit of fun' in a school room with friend, and now Nashville-based producer, Luke Garfield. In 2007, the '...lamecore' EP pricked ears up at home and abroad, with 'Bethanie' and 'She Talked To Me!' spun on North American college radio. A month-long US tour followed, and featured performances at LA's Roxy Theatre (On the Rox) and NYC's CMJ Music Marathon (Organic Showcase).
HBC are
Teddy Hernandez (Vocals, Keys, Lyrics)
Carter (Drums)
Sullo (Guitars, Backing Vocals).
PRESS
"Heartbreak Club's smarts have served them well... it's clear that despite what they say [when explaining the album title 'Our Horse is Dead], that horse they're flogging is well and truly alive and kicking" - Katherine Quinn, Canberra Times (April 2010)
Featured in the upcoming May/June 2010 issue of TV Hits
HBC "channel the sounds of The Get Up Kids, Saves the Day and Weezer into one hell of an impressive powerpop effort. Whilst avoiding ripping off the aforementioned bands Heartbreak Club have their own take on things, which is refreshing to hear... 8/10" - BLUNT
"O Tempora! O Mores! 8/10. With catchy guitar riffs and sing-along choruses, 'O Tempora' makes for a fantastic listen" - Tsunami Mag
"With their new release O Tempora! O Mores! Heartbreak Club have created one of the most addictive EP's I've heard in a long time. The five songs are the perfect blend of punk, pop and rock music. The tunes are accessible, but the clever lyrics ensure these tunes stay left of the mainstream" - Oz Music Scene
"Australia has a long and proud history of satire and self-deprecation, with names like Chris Lilley, Barry Humphries and the boys from ABC's Chaser series famed for bringing larrikin humour to the stage. Now a group of musical "neo-punks" are preparing to follow in the footsteps of their comedic countrymen with a new manner of making music" - Katherine Feeney, Brisbane Times
"These songs are on par with the best in the genre, and their take on it puts them across as being smarter and more approachable than most" - Jeff Walker, Merredin Wheatbelt Mercury
