Derek Blakey Bio

blog post
Current Residency: Lewisville, TX Day Gig: I do consulting, computer & delivery work for my parent's business. On Music: I got into music at a very young age (4 or 5) listening to my parents Johnny Cash, Beatles, & Elvis records. On Bass: I really wanted to play guitar at first for some ignorant reason. I got a garage sale special acoustic guitar, but as it didn't get that "Cool Guy Tone", I never really learned how to play it. Shorty after I pulled my head out of my ass, I decided bass would be a much cooler way to go. I immediately went pawn shop hopping and bought my first: a short scale Fender MusicMaster bass (now pretty much destroyed). It pretty much sucked, but it got me through until I could buy a real one; (but it was a Fender, like Steve Harris played dammit!) During that time I went through garage punk bands, high school top 40 bands, and shortly after that started gigging the local club scene. During this time, I went through a Jackson Concert Bass (a really fast neck-thru job that sounded like shit), an ESP (like Muzz Skillings' in the Cult Of Personality video), and then an assortment of Yamaha RBX 4 strings I can't quite put in order. On Haji's: Later, I entered a local guitar & bass wars contest put on by Z-Rock Radio. To make a short story even shorter; I won, (even through a 102 degree fever and an absolutely SCORCHING case of Strep Throat). I won a couple of cheap basses, some strings, and a short piece in Mike Varney's "Hometown Heroes" column in Guitar World. Most importantly though, one of the judges was tight with Clint Barlow, (Haji's drummer at the time). The as yet singerless & nameless band was looking for a new bass player. After a shaky first meeting, (& some shakier phone calls), the audition finally took place. After the first hour or so, it was pretty clear that something mighty cool was going on. Shortly thereafter, I parted ways with the band I was in, and joined Eddie, Brett {Stine} and Clint.
