The Tragedy of Ephemerality ________________________________________________________________________________ Track 1 - Return to the Beginning; I promise ________________________________________________________________________________ Track 2 - The Sun Sets, part I; The Bible sits Beside Atlas Shrugged Near Catch-22 Next to Ender's Game There're coffee stains On the piano In the dining room Where no one eats There's no backyard 'Cause it's a condo So instead there're walks To the park at night And the sun sets on the heart of The lights go up as the sun goes down And the sun sets on the heart A man smiles to the dark, loving his ghost town The sun sets on the heart of the city Sits on the Heart There's a VHS Of High Plains Drifter By the DVD Of Pulp Fiction The old radio Is tuned to static Can't find any Decent stations In the living room On the coffee table There's a stack of old And faded papers Beside this mess There's an old wood clock Don't think it works Hasn't rung in years And the sun sets on the heart of The lights go up as the sun goes down And the sun sets on the heart A man smiles to the dark, loving his ghost town The sun sets on the heart of the city Sits on the Heart In the bathroom There is a girl Showering off Her blue-eyed smile Her skin is pale Her hair dark brown From the mirror She turns in shame Insecure and Never quite happy She hates to love Thanks to her family Meanwhile, he climbs the stairs His mind now quite blank After his latest affair Even though his wife has not been here for years He still finds himself Breaking down hard into tears Then just when, he reaches the top He stops to take a look, and laughs at himself This isn't his story; at least not this part It won't end here this way, not while he still owns his Heart And the sun sets on the heart of The lights go up as the sun goes down And the sun sets on the heart A man smiles to the dark, loving his ghost town The sun sets on the heart of the city Sits on the Heart ________________________________________________________________________________ Track 3 - No Subtle Innuendo; I'm not gonna lie to you baby, I am not the tiniest bit sorry That I did so very little To repay you for you work I'm not gonna lie here darling I don't feel bad in the least Having asked you quite a bit rudely To have you suck out all my fears How much further can we go? How much further will we go? (Female moaning) So lean in just a little bit closer Open that pretty mouth wide Don't wince, baby; just smile for me As I paint this catharsis all over your face I'm not gonna lie to you baby, You did things just the right way No qualms, no frowns, and no damn questioning You kissed me just like I paid for it And here I'm gonna lie now, darling And say some pretty courteous things Like, I hope it was just as good for you, And, I just can't wait to have you again How much further can we go? How much further will we go? (Female moaning) So bend over just a little bit farther Hold it; that pose is perfect Don't wince, baby; just smile for me As I paint this catharsis all over your back How much further can we go? How much further can we go? How much further will we go? How much further will we go? (Female moaning throughout) How much further? I have to know ... How much further? I have to know! How much further, before this show Ends (Female moaning) So open those legs just a bit wider, sweety I said wider, darling, wider Don't wince, baby; just smile for me As I paint this catharsis inside ________________________________________________________________________________ Track 4 - Forever Isn't Ever (La la); Da do da do da do Ba da dum Baaa da Da da do da da dum Da do da du dum Ba do da du dum Bu da da dum Daaum When you were oh so young I can see it in your eyes You tried to fit in so damn hard You told a thousand lies But your peers, they never liked you With taunts they made you cry And then, one day, your mother Dear Lord, please bless her heart She told you that it was okay To stand alone--apart To be a different type of man To be both proud and smart For what is on the outside Just doesn't really matter When the sun has ceased its final burning laughter Will you taste the seasons? Will you shudder beneath the summer's sun, And grasp at doves when the frozen year Comes to its brilliant, silent close Da do da do da do Ba da dum Baaa da Da da do da da dum Da do da du dum Ba do da du dum Bu da da dum Daaum So you stand, staring Judging--being judged You'd hoped to be a Roark But the Wynand you've become Refuses to let you drop your fears And kill your faults alone I see it there, in your eyes The thoughts of going home Of returning to that quiet place Of disregarding all you've done Of letting fall the curtains And telling them they have won If that is what you want I'll let you leave yourself But, my friend, please do not ever forget ... Will you taste the seasons? Will you shudder beneath the summer's sun, And grasp at doves when the frozen year Comes to its brilliant, silent close Da do da do da do Ba da dum Baaa da Da da do da da dum Da do da du dum Ba do da du dum Bu da da dum Daaum I guess they never told you That forever isn't ever Exactly what it seems Exactly what it seems They lied there in the movies They lied there on TV They told you you'd find true love But, to me, it seems You've wasted all this past year And all the years behind So please reach out your cold hands And trade your life for mine We'll sing this song together Humming words that don't quite rhyme And maybe, oh just maybe With my help you will find ... Will you taste the seasons? Will you shudder beneath the summer's sun, And grasp at doves when the frozen year Comes to its brilliant, silent close Da do da do da do Ba da dum Baaa da Da da do da da dum Da do da du dum Ba do da du dum Bu da da dum Daaum Da do da do da do Ba da dum Baaa da Da da do da da dum Da do da du dum Ba do da du dum Bu da da dum Daaum Da do da do da do Ba da dum Baaa da Da da do da da dum Da do da du dum Ba do da du dum Bu da da dum Daaum ________________________________________________________________________________ Track 5 - There's a Reason This Song has a One Word Title; Don't look up and laugh like that, I know it was a foolish choice Don't speak those words, please not tonight Derision would kill me, riding your voice But, instead, he rides on solar winds Laughing at our stellar dilemma He tells me that I should have saved the rest But I am hardly a savior of sins So let's both share a heartfelt kiss With the crystalline lips of the moon And look down on the wreckage of our world I wonder; did we give up just a little too soon? You say that I shouldn't've let the bombs falls I say that it's more fun gazing at stars with you Although now I do suppose That I should have bade my friends adieu So now I'll ask you to forget it all And dance here with me, up amongst the stars I'll make you a queen if you'll crown me your king Because, my love, heaven is ours I know that it still must seem so wrong To have just abandoned the Earth on that day But I think that all of this debris Looks kind of nice, in an avant-garde way Heh, your eyes, they're burning like supernovas Is it pain, hatred, fear, despair that I see? Or joy, wonder, and excitement at the new dawn we've created? There are a hundred, a thousand new things we could do, And see, and feel out here, in this vast wilderness of dark All I want is to share this with you, and only you, forever That's all I want, I swear There are no more connections left All the satellites have finally gone down There must be others, out here somewhere Let's try to swim for shore; just don't drown And I am sure, that we'll find someone If we feel a bit too alone Hell, we could even rebuild our world And make a palace, for us, a home All right, I guess you can say That I was in the wrong And, you know, I can't think of a single retort Hence, the title of this song Because I could do nothing but Cry As I picked you up and held you close And watched the world fall by ________________________________________________________________________________ Track 6 - Firestarter; So start the fire Light the way with the bodies of your foes Remember that, no matter how dark it gets This is the path you chose So walk it tall And walk it proud Do not shrink from the horror, the guilt The dead men crying aloud And take this rusty nail; drive it deep inside Abort the womb, seal the tomb Make sure no one leaves alive Take a hammer to what's left; let nothing here remain Weild your hate, seal their fate Their fallen will rot with shame So start the fire Light the way with the bodies of your foes Remember that, no matter how dark it gets This is the path you chose So walk it tall And walk it proud Do not shrink from the horror, the guilt The dead men crying aloud So take this rusty dream; breathe into it life Confront their hate, seal their fate Live so that they might die Heave a sword down on what's left; paint their world a dark red stain Abort their hope, let them sing from rope Your struggle won't end in vain So start the fire Light the way with the bodies of your foes Remember that, no matter how dark it gets This is the path you chose So walk it tall And walk it proud Do not shrink from the horror, the guilt The dead men crying aloud And when they tell you That your world is done for And when they tell you That you are alone Don't break down, not just yet There's still more of this fight left Just turn to me, I'll take your hand I'll bleed for you; I'll be your man I will vomit when you feel sick I'll swallow your pain, all of it I'll drink the poison meant for your throat I'll be your shining sword; I'll be your hope So start the fire Light the way with the bodies of your foes Remember that, no matter how dark it gets This is the path you chose So walk it tall And walk it proud Do not shrink from the horror, the guilt The dead men crying aloud So chase the fire Fight with your body, with your mind and with your soul Remember that, no matter how hard it gets This is the path you chose So walk it tall And stand up proud Do not shrink from the horror, because I'll be there for you, broooother (I'll be there for you, brother) ________________________________________________________________________________ Track 7 - What If...; What... What if I... Was a good man? Would you sing great and wonderful praise to me? What... What if I... Was a sad man? Would you take me to the land, the land of my dreams? What... What if I... Was a madman? Would you shut me away, lock me away in a darklit place? What... What if I... Was not listening? Would you care? Would you share All the things That we should be? Would you care (Would you care at all) Would you share (Would you share with me) All the things (All the splendor of this life) That we should be (That we should know)? Or would you take it all And cast it away? Bury it beneath the sand Like a sharpened memory, Driven through my hand? What... What if I... Was a hero? Would you follow me down into the abyss? What... What if I... Was a coward? Would you throw words like stones at my fears? What... What if I... Was nothing special? Would we still clasp our hands and walk by the sea? What... What if I... Did not know you? Would you care? Would you share All the things That we should be? Would you care (Would you care at all) Would you share (Would you share with me) All the things (The splendor of this life) That we should be (That we should know)? Or would you take it all And cast it away? Bury it beneath the sand Like a sharpened memory, Driven through my hand? What... What if I... Were to tell you? Were to tell you? That... That I was... So much more? So much more... That I could walk through the sky and break the heart of the sun; I could change all the colors and all the numbers into one; I could freeze a man's heart with a glimpse or a glare; I could dance there with devils and gods if I'd dare Maybe you'd laugh and call me a fool, And tell me that I couldn't break all those rules Well then I might have to do something drastic; Act like a maniac, wild and spastic And change the genre of this pleasant little song But hold on, just wait, before not too long I'll nail Christ's palms to the wood of the cross; Hell, I don't give a damn, it's not my loss And so now I ask you, here at the end If you would just smile for once, and call me your friend I don't want to be a hero, and I don't want to fight I don't want to change the world, not with this life What... What if I... Just want stay here; yes, here by your side? ________________________________________________________________________________ Track 8 - The Orchard; Welcome monsieur Won't you please step this way You've come to the right place If you want a girl today Now I don't know your type yet But I will very soon So please, if you don't mind, Step into this room Here you can see All the types that we offer Would you like a girlfriend, a wife? Maybe a mother, or a daughter? Ah, a good choice, sir Our most popular model Would you like one you can hug? Or one you can throttle? Oh--those, right back there The ones with flushed faces And pigtail-style hair? Yes sir, I know They do look quite young But they're grown especially To know how to use their, ah, gifts Planted at birth, grown to perfection These girls don't need love, care or affection They are meant to be used, they are meant to be wasted Most end up forgotten somewhere in the basement So bring down the kids And give a lesson on lust While you buy one for your friend Or maybe to earn your boss's trust So, that's your choice, sir? Certainly a crowd favorite I have one myself And she's quite well behaved I hope that you have fun Use her for all she's worth And, of course, when she wears out You will be fully reimbursed It will be a short little while Before she does awaken Please don't use her before that time Others have proven such behavior will break them Oh, and sir--one more thing Quick, before you go Would you like to donate to us It's for a terrific cause, you know All you need to do is give us your daughter Or maybe your wife, if that would suit you We'll regrow her into some much more special A toy for other men--or women--to screw Planted at birth, grown to perfection These girls don't need love, care or affection They are meant to be used, they are meant to be wasted Most end up forgotten somewhere in the basement ________________________________________________________________________________ Track 9 - She Gave You ...; When you were born she aborted your dreams Replacing your umbilical noose with some rope She carried you, bleeding, out into a hearse And showed you your home--not for better, but for worse You were weened on the poison of her breath And she only took the time to wash you When it was thundering and pouring outside God, those were some terrible nights She gave you a Texas funeral She buried your hopes beneath all her lies And now you're running out of oxygen I don't think you have what it takes to make it out alive She fashioned for you an airtight casket And now you're running out of oxygen And I don't think you'll last When your life passed by its sixteenth hard year For you, her only son, she did buy a car And locked you with it there in the garage Leaving that motherfucker turned on As you clawed your nails against the door It's true, my son--the marks, they still remain She laughed and told you never to leave your home You were her son, and her's alone She gave you a Texas funeral She buried your hopes beneath all her lies And now you're running out of oxygen I don't think you have what it takes to make it out alive She fashioned for you an airtight casket And now you're running out of oxygen And I don't think you'll last So now it is time, my son, to lay and rest And kiss away whatever future you might have had Please don't cry son, it'll only make things worse There's already an ache in my heart--dear God, it hurts I ... tried, I swear to God I did But your mother, my lover, she threatened in ways no man could So now I sit here driving these nails down Into your coffin, with tears and frown She gave you a Texas funeral She buried your hopes beneath all her lies And now you're running out of oxygen I don't think you have what it takes to make it out alive She fashioned for you an airtight casket And now you're running out of oxygen And I don't think you'll last She gave you a Texas funeral She suffocated you with all her lies And now all the lights have gone out What's waiting in the dark, well, that's a surprise She fashioned for you an airtight casket And I don't think ... you ... caaaan ... ________________________________________________________________________________ Track 10 - No Chords Will Play; Last night, she struck the keys Her fingers white, hands shaking hard But no chords would play, not on that day Not as, from eyes to ivory, starlight did fall Today, she cries aloud Her eyes bloodshot, heart shaking hard And no one, not from this day Will say to her that they live and love for her alone So strike up a tune, girl Let the sound of it carry you away No one will listen here, But there is no shame In hammering the keys When no chords will play So strike up a song, girl Let's hear it today Let the power of the silence Carry us away And now, there is a flame Burning on her windowsill The wind does dance with it, does sing with it Teasing her memories with half-forgotten dreams And she, remembering All the things it means to her Will never let the storms outside Extinguish her final connection So strike up a tune, girl Let the sound of it carry you away No one will listen here, But there is no shame In hammering the keys When no chords will play So strike up a song, girl Let's hear it today Let the power of the silence Carry us away It seems, so long ago Every day has been a year She can hardly recall the songs that he would, For her, would play in the darkest reaches of night I won't ask you Not to cry But I never said You had to say goodbye Tomorrow the flowers, They will still bloom Lay them on your heart, Your lover's true tomb So wrap the casket In ribbons of gold It becomes a treasure For you to hold So strike up a tune, girl Let the sound of it carry you away No one will listen here, But there is no shame In hammering the keys When no chords will play So strike up a song, girl Let's hear it today Let the power of the silence Carry us away So strike up a song, girl Let the sound of it carry you away No one will listen here, But there is no shame In hammering the keys When no chords will play So strike up a song, girl Let's hear it today Let the power of the silence Carry us away ________________________________________________________________________________ Track 11 - The Sun Sets, part II; His novel sits, Beneath a lamp Dust smothers it The title's blurred There is a TV On a stack of books Hemmingway, Kafka Proust, Plato The wall is stained With colors so sharp All from him Pictures from his head And the sun sets on the heart of the city The lights go up as the sky burns out And the sun sets on the heart A man laughs at the dark, taking a knife to his Sun falls on the heart of the city Falls from his heart Broken glasses Like shattered dreams Scar the kitchen Just like his arms Empty cupboards Like empty hopes He's starved himself With no remorse On the wall Photographs Crooked and faded Of years ago A smile cracks his lips Whenever he happens To gaze upon them Are they the friends that he once loved? And the sun sets on the heart of the city The lights go up as the sky burns out And the sun sets on the heart A man laughs at the dark, taking a knife to his Sun falls on the heart of the city Falls from his heart In the bathroom There are bloodstains But from where He doesn't quite know He seems images Of a brilliant young girl She shines before his eyes But he doesn't quite know He doesn't quite know What she meant to him If she meant anything If he means anything Finally, then, he takes to the stairs His mind now quite blank After nearly twenty years Even though, his love has been long lost in tears He still finds himself Smothering the day in his fears Then just when, he reaches the top, He passes another; but this one doesn't stop He climbs to the top, and laughs at himself Without another word, he leans forward for His final bow And the sun sets on the heart of the city The lights go up as the sky burns out And the sun sets on the heart A man laughs at the dark, taking a knife to his Sun falls on the heart of the city Falls from his heart ________________________________________________________________________________ Track 12 - Don't Close Your Eyes; Will you ...? Shall we ...? Shall we save ourselves and our hearts, Whilst still jumping at once from the highest towers, Landing together on the fragile glass of our bodies and Shattering into each other like broken ornaments? I want you to take me, to hold me, to make me not myself, But you--you and I together. You and I and only you and I; not the others. Not the others that have cried and whispered and howled your Name in the night, wishing to pluck you as if from an orchard. Will we bury each other alive, painting a catharsis so profound It drowns us, swallowed by the silence as we strike upon ourselves Like instruments? Will we start a fire, and watch as the world falls by? Our forever won't ever be what we'll expect--but tonight there IS no forever. I don't care if you're a queen or a coward; I care that you are mine. You are mine and I am yours, and this moment is you and I and ours and us Together in one piece, shattered and broken into my body and into your body As though we didn't even care. This moment--this will blast us to pieces. Let this be our only moment, our only dusk; the only thing we have left. I'll be your masochist; so tear me to pieces! Tear and rip and love and rend! Let us see, and let us feel and cry and writhe and forget in this moment. Look into my heart; look into my heart. Promise me, PROMISE ME you won't close your eyes. You won't ever, not ever, not even for a moment. You won't close your eyes.
