Pop / Rock / Folk Rock
Gemma Leigh Pinto first started songwriting at 11. A year later she learned to play piano and write music for the songs. Attending various theatre workshops helped her to develop her skills as a songwriter and as a musician. At in time, she perfected her songwriting skills by writing songs about different types of relationships, love, hate and life in general. Having come across many of these experiences in and around her life, it helped Gemma to mature as an artist.
Gemmas musical styling varies between Indie, Pop/Rock and Country/Folk. Listening to her main influences (Joni Mitchell, Patty Griffin, Bonnie Riatt, Lisa Loeb, Michelle Branch and Jessica Harp) encouraged Gemma to learn how to play the guitar, and also helped her to find her own individual sound. Learning the guitar also meant Gemma would find out a lot more about her familys history in music. Already aware of her fathers Zimbabwean musical heritage (his cousin Dorothy Cox is a singer/ songwriter based in Sweden), she found that her mother and Uncle are musicians who were born and raised in the Philippines. The things Gemma discovered while learning guitar is a major influence on the title of her debut EP Full of Secrets.
