Born at a time of great political turmoil and alleged musical drought, hailing from the (real) Deep South of Argentina via Marseille, France, to the San Francisco Bay Area & Austin, Texas, Gaby Beker has never been one to stay in one place long enough to grow roots. Not the physical kind anyway. Musically, spiritually, emotionally, that would be another story or bunch of stories altogether. In the long tradition of the middle ages folk troubadour, Gaby Beker's songs tell many stories and conjure all sorts of times, places and people. The cool, swinging Paris of the 1950's, the summer of love of 60's California, the glitter and spunk of the 70's glam-then-prog-then-punk rock explosion in England, the indie-pop/alternative rock craze of his teenage years in the 80's & 90's are but a few of the stops along the way. His unique vocal delivery and mastery of the many moods the acoustic guitar can produce render the trip all but unforgettable. Yet the songs chock-full of hooks, the friendly, unassuming demeanor, the almost inaudible but hilarious in-between-songs banter... those are what makes an evening with Gaby Beker truly memorable. And if you've never heard that old story of fall and redemption, of sinners made whole, come experience the joy of a show/trip with Gaby Beker and you too will agree that sometimes the destination doesn't matter as much as the journey. And as he likes to put it in his signature song, "Fly! Fly! Fly!" in a tongue-in-cheek take on Neil Young's famous lyric, "to be floating in the stratosphere is better than to be stuck in the ground." Fly, fly, fly indeed.
