The night is cold and the streets are lonely. She takes a final drag off of her last cigarette. The tattered stiletto heels snuff the last vestiges of life out of the discarded smoke. She takes a deep breath and wraps her worn jacket about her and braves into the night. But she knows she will make a difference, five dollars at a time. Strong song stylings coupled with blistering musicianship create the powerful backbone to one of L.A.'s most exciting new bands.
Carl Marrelli and Jahny Sprague make up the rhythmic backbone of Fydolla Ho and when they meld with James Mills' wickedly intense axemanship; the musical core of this great quartet is established. But the mix wouldn't be complete without the siren-like voice of Fydolla Ho's lead singer, Shawnee Smith.
Shawnee is most famous for her acting roles in many of the biggest films and TV series of our time. But as important as that part of her life is, she finds a special kind of fulfillment belting out the vocals to the titanic tracks that Fydolla Ho has unleashed on the world to date. Their song style incorporates many influences ranging from The Misfits to Frank Sinatra.
The songs themselves will leave you breathless as the music rages and curses in perfect juxtaposition to Shawnee's biting and deeply personal lyrics. From the schizophrenic feel of "Dark Side of the Lounge" to the straight-out back alley drive of "Afraid", Fydolla Ho are carving their own special niche in Los Angeles' thriving punk scene. As with every woman, the strong punk side of Fydolla Ho is tempered with a softer, more vulnerable side to all of this back alley talk.
Shawnee also takes listeners down the rainy streets of Liverpool with one of the Ho's most powerful tracks, "Mersey". There are definitely two sides to every kind of woman, Fydolla Ho's included. Fydolla Ho is truly a great live musical experience on stage today.
