These summer months
Theres something about a true Wisconsinite that has some sort of genetic proclivity for cooler weather. Something in our DNA allows us to slow our heart beats down to a barely detectable rate when the temperature rises above 80 degrees. Maybe it permits us to bend the time-continuum curve and make the relatively few warm days in the year last just a bit longer. Maybe were like beached sucker-fish, barely able to breathe until someone tosses us back into the cool water of the non-summer months. Maybe Im just looking for a real good excuse for why we havent made as much progress as we planned on our recording project.
We have made some progress though. Curts got drums on 5-6 tracks; Ricks got guitar to some degree on most of those tracks and we are poised to begin bass and vocals next week on those 5-6 songs. We had hoped to have these songs completed by the end of June but progress slowed as the temperature climbed. We found that the dissention into the basement studio on a beautiful summer afternoon, forsaking the sun for a coffee-buzz and a headphone hangover, was not only difficult but downright contrary to our Wisconsinite instincts.
This summer has had its activities, however
In June we participated in the second annual Steel Bridge Songfest in Sturgeon Bay Wisconsin. It began with a short set played on the main stage, along the water front downtown, adjacent to the legendary bridge on the Great Lakes Yacht Repair property. Then, later in the evening, we played at the Nautical Inn a couple blocks farther into town. We shared the stage with various other bands that had converged upon this medium sized blue-collar / resort town. For one night in June, Sturgeon Bay was the original music capitol of the state (if not the mid-west) with simultaneous live, original acts performing at 6 clubs within a mile radius. This could develop into something very cool when the word truly gets out. Im thinking a future SXSW (after Austin, TX South by Southwest week that showcases unsigned bands from all over the country and attracts the music industry in search of new talent). Maybe it should be something like WTFUN (or, Way the F*** Up North).
In July we played our every-other-monthly gig at Heroes Club in Green Bay. It was hot. It was both invigorating and debilitating in the same set of four hours. We tend to leave everything weve got on the stage by the end of the night and that task takes far less effort when the temperature tops 100 on stage. We played until we were sure we couldnt play any longer and the crowd was as spent as we were (except for that one guy at then end of the night screaming One more song . I swear, wherever we play, its always the same guy).
August and on to cooler months
Were going to finish the first batch of songs this next month. Even if it means we have to develop a taste for iced coffee. Hopefully its rainy and cool but historically thats not the way it goes in Wisconsin. We are also contemplating taking the songs we are recording (most of which we have never played live ) out to some of the local open-mic nights and giving them a trial run. I dont know that were going to be advertising the where and when of these occurrences but well probably pass the word along to any of you who might be on our mailing list.
Stay tuned.Stay CoolDont let your neck warp
