Our goal has never changed... have fun and make great music.

HISTORY
In 1997 a group of teachers at Indian River High School got together to play at the annual student talent show. The core of the group was made up of teachers who had played LONG ago in some of the areas best rock acts (all had been retired for years). It was supposed to be a novelty... a one time thing. As the show date loomed, it was clear we needed something special... a guitar player who could handle the lead breaks. Enter Fred. Friends with Tom and Jim, Fred gave the band the sound it needed. The show was a hit. We decided to play again the next year. Then something incredible happened, People started asking us to play at private parties, dances and other events. Soon we expanded to local clubs, dances, weddings, colleges and outdoor concerts. We still try to keep it fun and low key, but our commitment to music is absolutely professional. The fact is, we love to perform, we love to see people dance and have fun. We do it for the love of the music. They say people don't go out like they used to. We'd like to change that.

BIOGRAPHIES:
Fred Lanham
Guitar, lead vocals, harmonica, mandolin and banjo
Fred has played professionally for over thirty years. He has an encyclopedic knowledge of music from Motown to the Beatles. Fred also has an fine collection of guitars from classic Gibsons, to rare Fenders. His most prized possession is a beautiful green Stratocaster that Eric Clapton signed when the two musicians met in NYC. Fred has also met Carlos Santana and Kenny Wayne Shepherd. Fred is a retired police officer.

Steve Martin
Guitar, trumpet, keyboards, percussion, vocals.
Steve comes from near Oneida, NY. He is a graduate of the prestigious Crane School of Music. An instrument major, Steve can play anything. He is often seen with a guitar around his neck or a trumpet in his hands...sometimes in the same song! He has played with international recording artists Tommy Gunn and the Endangered Species. In college, Steve was half of the Jazz/Rock group Reversion. Steve is a Music Teacher for Indian River CSD

Tom Murray
Drums, percussion and lead vocals.
Tom is from Auburn, NY. He graduated from St Lawrence University and SUNY Oswego. He has played with some of the best dance bands in New York State. He has performed with Reporter (a Rochester band formed from members of Nick & the Nice Guys) and The Marshall Tucker Band. Locally he has played with more bands than he can remember... among them Moonlighting, Glyder , The John Hart Band and the infamous Larry & the Lounge Lizards. Tom teaches at Indian River CSD and is an adjunct professor at SUNY Jefferson.

Jim Oxenford
Trombone, piano, synth and percussion.
Jim is from Buffalo, NY. Jim is a graduate of SUNY Fredonia, which has a nationally recognized music program. Jim is famous for his ability to learn quickly and is one of the most sought after pit band musicians in the area. He has played for countless performances. In Fred & the EDs, he leads the Horns of Insanity and writes out all the charts for the horns. Jim is an English teacher for Indian River CSD.

Shannon Whitney
Saxophone and percussion
Shannon is from the Watertown, NY area. She played sax in SUNY Oswegos famous Solid State during her college years. When not playing with the EDs, she participates in horse shows all over the United States. Recently she traveled to Tulsa, Oklahoma for the 2007 US Nationals. Shannon is an Administrator in Special Education.

Michel Rainville
Electric,acoustic bass and background vocals
Michel has his roots in Quebec, but spent most of his youth in Black River, N.Y. In keeping with the bands tradition, he has a background in teaching; specifically French. He has long since departed that field and works as a television producer. Having played professionally since the mid-60's, he is very comfortable within the extensive classic rock and R&B repertoire of F.A.T.E. His technique ads greatly to the solid foundation of the band's rhythm section and makes you want to stay on the dance floor. Former bands include "Orb", "Skat", and most recently "Yikes". He has shared the stage with Ronnie James Dio & Elf, The Bobby Comstock Band, both the original Ed Wool & The Nomads, The South Shore Road Band, and David Alan Coe. Like Fred, he shares a passion for fine vintage instruments.

Jeffrey Wood
Trumpet
Jeff was born in Alexandria Bay, NY and graduated from South Jefferson and later attended Jefferson Community College. He started playing trumpet in elementary school and played in jazz band and community concert bands in college and when he attended the maritime academy in Michigan. Jeff has been a member of the Original Yanks Drum and Bugle Corps since 1980, and has been the director for the past 17 years. He also writes and arranges all of the music for the Drum Corps. In keeping with the "Ed" tradition, Jeff taught computer networking at Jefferson Community College for 5 years and currently is Information Services Manager for a major local hospital. When not writing or playing music Jeff is an avid bike rider and organizes fundraisers for the Lance Armstrong Foundation and the American Cancer Society.

WHAT'S WITH THE NAME?
We get this question all the time. People want to know which one of us is Ed or which one is Fred. The truth is, we've never had anyone in the band named Ed. When the band started everyone in the band was a teacher... so the ED stands for EDucators. There's always been a Fred though, he's a real person... but since he wasn't a teacher, we came up the name Fred & the EDs. Odd as it was, the name stuck. Although now many people just call us the EDs. They're what we call ED Heads.
By the way, six of us are, or have been EDucators: Shannon (Special Ed), Tom (Art), Jim (English), Steve (Music), Michel (formerly- French), and Jeff (formerly- computer networking).
