Times, they are a changin. Want proof? Just last year, a new band named Family Force 5 came in second for "Best New Artist." This year, they dominated-the band was your pick for, well, e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g. Here's the list of categories that Family Force 5 Won: Best Artist, Best Band, Most Underrated Artist, Best Website, Best Live Performance, Artist You'd Most Like To See On The Cover Of CCM, Most Likely To Be The Breakout Artist Of 2008.
'Within the School of Rock, the members of Family Force 5 are the cool teachers handing out endless hall passes, granting permission for everyone to just have fun. And in a musical climate where most are either taking themselves too seriously or pressured into a sonic formula, the Atlanta-based "crunk rock" group is making waves by simply inviting everyone to the party they've started.
"Not to sound arrogant, but there really aren't a lot of bands out there that sound like Family Force 5," says Chap Stique, otherwise known as guitarist Derek Mount. "It's been something people have really embraced because they're sick of hearing the same thing, and they're ready for a party."
"For some reason, when people listen to our music, they lose their inhibitions and always wanna have fun," adds Soul Glow Activator, a.k.a. vocalist Solomon Olds. "If a music store had a 'party' section and a 'firecracker' section, I think we'd be placed right between those. That's what I feel like our music is. It's very fun and very energy-oriented."
However, the band's members, rounded out by Crouton (drummer Jacob Olds), Fatty (bassist Joshua Olds) and Nadaddy (multi-instrumentalist Nathan Currin), weren't always surrounded by sonic party favors. Solomon, Jacob, and Joshua Olds got their start in the mid-'90s as The Brothers before eventually forming The Phamily with their current bandmates. Copyright issues forced them to switch to their current moniker.
Under the name Family Force 5, the bandmates melded multiple sounds into one all-inclusive mix. Various members cite influences ranging from hip-hop to heavy metal with an appreciation for everything in between, resulting in the aforementioned crunk rock.
It wasn't long before both Maverick and Gotee Records jumped on board with the fun, allowing Family Force 5 to release 'Business Up Front, Party in the Back' to both general and Christian markets. The results have been nothing short of impressive, with strong album sales, a spot on the "Vans Warped Tour," and recognition for winning Yahoo! Music's "Who's Next?" competition.
Yet for all the people falling in love with FF5, the band is not without its detractors. Surprisingly, most of those come from inside the church, not outside of it. "We have problems with people who are into Churchianity," says Soul Glow Activator. "They see us dancing and going crazy on stage and using the lingo we're using, and for some reason we're persecuted for being different.
"It's the type of people who still listen to records and play them backwards and stuff, and they're listening for hidden messages," continues Soul Glow Activator. "We have a few of those kooky people who come to us while we're trying to hang with the kids and shake their hands. They'll come up and say, 'What's this lyric supposed to mean? All you guys (did) was just jump around a lot. I didn't hear the name of Jesus.' We usually rebuttal with the fact that we're leading kids to Jesus Christ. 'How many kids are you leading to Christ everyday?' Not that it needs to be some kind of match or anything, but you can kinda get to the point where you just want to say, 'What are you doing for Christ?'"
"I have been completely shocked at how progressive and excited the church has been as a whole," adds Chap Stique. "We've met some incredible youth groups, ministers, and club owners and promoters who are really excited about what we're doing. I also think any persecution we face from a religious perspective has been from the church rather than the outside. Part of our message is to say, 'Rather than run away from what is bad, let's start running toward what is good.'"
Yet neither the growing acclaim nor the opposition keeps the band from their primary focus. "What we're really trying to do is just be open to everybody and show Christlike love instead of trying to condemn anybody or anything," explains Solomon. "We played the Warped Tour. We play churches. We'll play pretty much anywhere that anybody will have us. The message of Christ needs to hit everybody. Jesus didn't just preach to the church. He went to everybody. He talked to everybody. We want to make sure we're saying our stuff to everybody."
Bringing the permission slips to everybody means utilizing much more than music. Family Force 5 has big plans for the new year including a DVD release of their "Really Real" webisodes (Our Spinal Tap), a possible new album and multiple tours, the first of which is tentatively titled the "Skills Pay Bills Tour."
It's the latter that offers the best glimpse into the frenetic party world of Family Force 5. "I think with Family Force 5, you come to a show, but it's actually more of an experience," explains Solomon Olds. "You come away saying that you went through something life changing. It's not just five or six guys up there playing some good rock & roll music. You come away sweaty saying, 'Wow, did I really do that at that show?'"
"I think one of the craziest moments for me on this tour was playing Creepy Crawl," laughs Mount, while recounting the events. "It's this hilariously nasty, awesome club in St. Louis. It was the first night of the tour, and there was a point when all of us were standing on the drum riser with Crouton, and the entire crowd was on the stage going nuts. There were people laying on the ground, body surfing, moshing, dancing, breakdancing, two-stepping... everything was happening at once. It was the most diverse crowd of absolute insanity you've ever seen."
Then again, it' just another day in the life of Family Force 5. And if they have it their way, you'll accept their invitation to join the fun.'
Family Force 5 can be summarized into three words,"Crunk. Merlin. Dragons." --Chap Stique

Durrty Durrty Blog 38: Xana-two is here!
Current mood: blustery

Hey guys, this is Xanadu! I know you haven’t heard from me in many moons. The band likes to say that I left, but you know I didn’t. I was out because my little lady was having a little me. Per say...a mini-me! Heee heee. If you want to see what he looks like, go to my myspace. He’s posted in the pictures. And if you don’t care, that’s cool too. I’m hoping soon, everyone will see him due to Baby Gap. Hey, Tux, shut your pie-hole! This is my blog!
I’m back with the band now, and we are heading to Dallas. It should be a fine show. It’s the beginning of Skeletour. If you were planning to come to the tour because you saw the band a few weeks ago, you need to! We have new music, and I don’t know what to do in it yet. So come see me look like a fool.
I’ve listened to some of the new stuff, and I think everyone will like it. Actually, I know everyone will like it. So I hope to see you dancing with us! And if y’all have a skeleton mask, please bring it. And wear it in the audience! We NEED a lot of skeletons in the audience. Anything that resembles a skeleton. Or, if you just want to rip off your skin...no, don’t do that. We want our audience to resemble Skeletor.
I’m sorry to everybody that we are not going to see. This is a west-coast tour. But we will see you during Warped Tour, and bring your skeletons there, too!
I know people like bringing stuff for the band, and if you choose to do so for babies NOT on board, we can always use diapers. They poop a lot. And/or similac. Let’s not forget something for Crouton...he’s having an attitude right now. I don’t know what he needs, but think of him while you’re at it. He has a severe attitude whenever I mention babies around him.
P.S. For all the ladies out there, Chap Stique is not available. He will be married in 3 weeks. I’m so sorry. But Fatty is still available. This is Xanadu, signing off. Much love!

Durrty Durrty Blog 37: I should be making a Really Real Show & not waste time blogin’, by Tub-O
Current mood: busy
Hey Errr-body,
Tub-O here,
this is the 37th Blog anniversary!
what a extraordinary number!
Currently I am in a room directly above the room where they have placed Chap Stique’s guitar amplifier, so while typing this, I am hearing ol’ Chappy shreddin’ for the new Family Force 5 album.
People have been sending me a lot of the same questions, so now I will show you an example of every message I have been getting on myspace:
"when is the next really real show coming out??", "where are the Really Real DVD’s?", "why isn’t there any Really Real Shows?", "Hey Tub-O, this is your mother, make sure you clean your room when you get back from touring with those ’Force of Fantastic Family’ boys"
To answer you guys ["you guys" = "yall" in the north], I am working on the Really Real DVD’s. Which the deleted scenes make me remember why I deleted them. Not really, they are hilarious! Can’t wait for all you guys to see them.
Be patient, it takes some time to direct a sensational hit such as the Really Real Shows.
If it is easy, you guys should just make your own. Haha, Just kidding [Just kidding = JK in real life].
If you haven’t heard by now, I started ’One Hour Photo’ which is daily pictures taken by myself, of hanging out, recording, and touring.
It’s really almost been 6 months since I have been with the band, so you can imagine how great it is to be reunited again. For those that have been wondering, there was no room on the bus for ol’ Tub-O on the Heart Support tour. So please don’t send me any more death threats because I haven’t been making Really Real Shows, I can’t make them without the band, [we all saw how that turned out in Episode 13, yikes!].
So if you are to blame someone for no really real shows, blame the band for over-packing the bus.
For those that have been realizing the Audio blogs have been getting into just announcements, we have noticed as well, and we are trying to bring it back to telling stories and letting you guys know what is going on with us. At least Chappy and I want to tell stories, it seems to always disolve in to the Chap Stique Tub-O show or the "Chubb-O Show".
If you have any Really Real Show ideas, leave a comment of some plot ideas.
Also it couldn’t hurt to let us know what you want us to talk about in the audio blogs.
Or any ’Improv" games or something.
your friend,
-Tub-O

Hey, Fatty here. I’m so psyched to have some time off. Recording the new record is awesome. I need to go down and see Xanadu’s kid. I’ve been really working hard and busy to the bone. There were no fights on the last tour...because Xanadu wasn’t there. Hmm...I wonder if I should have a conversation with him. He could be the key to the conflict. I gotta think about it a bit to make sure that’s correct first.
I don’t want you guys to think badly about me. I just haven’t gotten down there to see his kid yet. Some kind of friend. But I’ve been busy. Anyway, on to other cool stuff. Thank you to all the people who wrote in to CCM. Your comments were very entertaining. I sat and read them over and over, laughing for hours.
I’m really psyched about this next tour. Skeletour’s going to be a lot of fun. He Man and Skeletor were a big part of my life growing up, and I can’t wait to share them with the world. It’s going to be entertaining, and we’ll have Xanadu back. Hopefully, he won’t complain as much as he’s complained in the past. I love the guy, but he’s an innate complainer.
So, I guess I’ll see you guys on the tour. Tune in next time, when Fatty writes in again. It should be about a month from now.

Durrty Durrty Blog 35: Vintage Back Pain Factory
Current mood: adventurous
Hey urrrbody. It’s nice having some time her in Atlanta.....errrr, wait a second, I’m not in Atlanta at all right now! I’m up here in snowy Michigan! ...and it’s wonderful. Jbellicious and I got to spend some great time in Grand Rapids the other day. I got to see our old pals John and Krissee from HeartSupport.com and they took us fly kick shopping. I found some awesome ones but they didn’t have my size. I guess they just weren’t meant to be. We shopped around a great old school record shop, an equally fun vintage clothing shop complete with horrible but awesome leather jackets--you should have bought that one John--and then ended up in the Aveda salon.
What a cool town. The rage there right now is to convert all the abandoned factory buildings into living space for lofts and commercial space for places like Aveda..pretty cool vibe. I don’t think I’d mind living in something that style at all..lots of character. If you get a chance, visit Grand Rapids and go shopping. You won’t regret it one bit.
As far as Atlanta, I’m loving the nice weather there lately. I spent the day Sunday getting my motorcycle ready for another riding season; I changed the oil, filled up the coolant, cleaned and lube the chain, filled up the tires, got her all nice and shiny...and went for a short but long-awaited ride on Monday. It was such a teaser. I can’t wait for some long mountain journeys later this year..hopefully alot more with Jbellicious along for the ride.
Quick side note, please pray for my back. It seems I somehow pulled a muscle yesterday and it’s hurting something fierce. On with the Bengay, heating pad, and Ibuprofen!
A Town Down,
N’dizzle. [thats what happens here in the "D".holla. you could find me on the "8" ..er.. mile? ...ATL is still better. im down. jbell agrees.]

February 27
Hello everyone. Hope everybody has been doing well. The Heartsupport tour was great, and it literally went out with a bang! I had a great time on the tour...met a lot of new friends...saw some old friends from the past. Now we're looking to the future.
On the last night of the Heartsupport tour in Billings, Montana, there were some great pranks. I especially liked the Cheez Whiz that was put in my hair because it took about 45 minutes to wash out. It was a good prank. Our bus broke down the day after, and it kind of reminds me of being stuck in Alaska again. We have been in Billings for two days, and we have nothing to do. I've caught up on enough CSI Miami and Law and Order to make me throw up.
I've also eaten at Guadalajara a time too many. Fatty really likes it. Montana doesn't make the best Mexican food in the world, but it sure makes some awesome snow that you can ski in.
I've always thought about skiing, but I think I'm a little too afraid. Because right now I kind of have job security with none of my limbs being broken. But I guess that's a risk I could take if I want to go skiing. Although I don't really like snow that much.
I think it is very pretty to look at it, but I have vivid memories of my childhood. We got about 2 or 3 inches of snow in Georgia, and my older brother Soul Glow shoved my face in the snow. It kind of hurt. But anyway, the past is the past. And the future is now. I'm excited about our new record, and getting a little time off to write and record it...to put out for all of you guys.
I'm also excited about seeing Xanadu's baby, Maxwell. I'm sure he'll be a cool kid. And a little eccentric. I wouldn't expect anything less coming from Xanadu.
This blog may not be durrty enough for you, but I'm clean right now. 'Cause it took me 45 minutes to wash cheez whiz out of my hair. I wonder if I could make a cheez whiz shampoo. Thanks, bah
Crouton
