Shattering Door To Walk Through Windows REVIEW
When I was asked to listen to the Shattering Doors to Walk Through Windows EP, I didn't know what to expect. I'd heard some members of Everyday Dying years ago in another band whose sound would be less than relevant now; I'd also heard some nice acoustic stuff from another member. Some odd hybrid of singer/songwriter-rapcore-funk?
Could be a nightmare
Any expectations I could have had were quickly shattered as I dropped the EP into my ears. I was met with brutal guitars and manic vocal delivery. I was met with creativity and lyrics uncommon of indi releases. I was listening to a great hard-core record! Vance, Shawn, and the Toms have entered recording with an impressive, though short, list of songs, five of which will rock you and one that'll lull you. All the while digging into your mind with thoughtful lyrics.
"Watch Me Bleed" leads off the CD, with an abrasiveness that wakes up the listener and directs them to a well-crafted song, setting the stage both musically and lyrically for what the next 30 minutes will have in store. The priorities of the band are laid bare with an aggressive, growling vocal delivery coupled with melodic hooks. "Alone Tonight" begins with a child singing a Sunday school classic "Jesus Loves Me", but quickly becomes something few blue-haired church teachers would tolerate, appealing more to younger blue-haired generations. On the third track "Crimson Stains", the brutality of Good Friday is recognized through a contemporary take on the prophetic words of Israel's Isaiah "With your stains you have given us life". Here Tom's vocal delivery is most reminiscent of Project 86's Andrew Schwab. "Beautiful Tragedy" is the most derivative of the song offerings, though impressive on its own. The vocal trade off, though present on most all songs on Shattering Doors, is most similar to Underoath here, the guitar riff makes one wonder if the band was listening to Ozzy on the way to the studio (are the similarities a homage or a crutch?). With that being said, the song rocks, and is one of my favorites on the EP! "Dethroned" ends with recognition on selflessness, declaring "my kingdom is so vacant", possibly setting one up to surrender to a new king. The closing cut displays Everyday Dying's tender side, with an 11 minute acoustic track. Epic as it is, and I am sure it's impressive live, it should have been edited down.
All in all, the future seems bright for central Iowa's Everyday Dying. The hope, honesty, and hooks they offer through there melodic metal is original and well executed. The thing I am most impressed with is the level of musicianship evident here. Diverse and dynamic styling with rhythmic interchanges from Vance, Tom, and Shawn, lay a ground work that the vocals mesh into in ways bordering on perfection. A fuller production will provide opportunity for their well-polished, intricate songs to fill the listener's ears and the sound systems of venues across the Midwest and beyond. I look forward to the future of this engaging band.
