Members: Drew Haley
Iâm Drew Haley. I grew up in a very small town in East Texas which we just called âthe sticksâ. There wasnât much to do on the weekends but ride four wheelers, go to football games, drink beer at the deer lease or wrap houses on Halloween. At age 8 my grandmother, Nonnie, taught me to harmonize and I started singing three part harmony with her and my aunt. We stayed pretty busy each week either singing at weddings, funerals, church or even the national anthem. To this day, they still make me sing backup when I go home for the holidays. I became even more inspired overhearing the record collection of my parents when they would invite friends over. I fell in love with the old albums of Hank Williams Sr., Janis Joplin, Allman Brothers, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Willie Nelson, The Stones, Patty Griffin, Otis Redding and ZZ Top. When I was 11 years old I picked up my brotherâs guitar and tacked up a chord chart from Walmart in my room and began teaching myself to play his guitar. That summer he entered a rehab facility to treat his drug addiction as my family struggled through the crisis. I found a great comfort in creating melodies and stream of conscious writing style during this time. The first song that I ever wrote that summer was about him called, âI know you betterâ. From that day on writing was the most therapeutic outlet Iâd ever known and I poured my heartaches, crushes, anger and secrets into my hello kitty notebooks. My music has always been a reflection of my personality. I may be as country as it gets but I donât wanna sing anything unless itâs got a little soul. I told my mom one day that, âItâs not that I want to write songs- I have to write songsâ.
I formed my first band in 7th grade and by the time I was 15 I was sitting in with a local southern rock band all around the back roads of East Texas and Louisiana. One night at The Bloody Bucket, they didnât want to let me in so I promised to run out the back if the cops came in the front. In Jasper, Texas a guy wouldnât leave me alone but I ran him off myself to avoid a fight with my band members. I sold my belt off stage one night for gas money to get my band back home.
After high school I turned down 3 scholarships for Theatre and decided to move to Austin where I played locally for about 5 years. During that time I recorded 2 albums, 3 demos and an EP. I fell in love with Nashville after winning an Austin songwriting competition in 2010, giving me the opportunity to play at the Blue Bird. I realized after my short visit that I was living in the wrong âmusic cityâ. A year later at 25 years old, I relocated to Nashville and am currently writing and co-writing every day.
