In a day and age where a rock band's merit is judged solely on its ability to imitate hooks spewed forth by some elusive modern music machine, and indie rock itself has surrendered to the mainstream hacks (rendering its once-dubious title a misnomer), few axe-wielding crusaders even bother to prove that putting a little extra thought into a memorable melody is worth more than every flashy production trick under the sun. Among the minority is a humble group of musicians under the obviously self-deprecating moniker DORKYHEAD. Bringing forth the rootsy, yet fully-structured guitar harmonies of yesteryear, Dorkyhead not only beckons revival in a stagnant music scene but also expands upon the appeal with punctuated rhythms ("Charming Dork"), bright vocal cadences ("We Got Da Gems"), and even a stylistic nod to the 80's DC hardcore punk scene with "Punk Rawk Jam," embodying a ubiquitous roar that established contemporaries have reached for, but never quite achieved, as well as patented use of the 80's vocoder effect and recording techniques lifted from the golden age of rock 'n roll. The gentle, yet ever dynamic croon of Dorkyhead (teasingly suggesting classic Motown greats at times, unleashing a powerful grindcore scream at other times) is even further augmented by guest appearances from established hip-hop MCs, leading to a universally pleasant, yet unabashedly eclectic experience. DORKYHEAD'S EPIPHANY is among the last decade's most definitive and noteworthy debuts from the rock 'n roll canon. The emo kid better watch his back.
