THOMAS MEEHAN: SENIOR, 17, DRUMS
Drums are a passion for Thomas Meehan. At age 9, he became interested in them and joined the 4th grade school band. This satiated him for a short time but it soon became dull and he decided to learn on his own. Thomas made the decision to become a self-taught musician, as he wanted to learn the craft of drums in an original manner without the prejudices of an
instructor. After many hours of practice, countless dented books and tables, he eventually received a drum set as a Christmas present. By the time he was freshman in high school, Thomas had become fairly proficient and wanted to refine his playing. He decided to join the high school band to learn how to read music as well as to learn some new material. Thomas also played in several bands outside of school, in a multitude of genres including; reggae, soca, metal, funk, punk, and rock. Thomas plans to continue playing music throughout his life and hopefully make it his career.
ANNE FINKLE: JUNIOR, 17, VOCALS
Anne Finkle is a junior at Sacopee Valley High who won Sacopee Valley High Schools Solo Vocal Contest, taking first place for her rendition of Peggy Lees Blues in the Night. Acclaimed for her jazzy voice, she decided to stretch things a little and audition for Southern Maine District One Honors Festival in November 2005. Getting the highest vocal score ever at her high school, she qualified for the festival. Once very shy about her large voice, she was now satisfied to find a place where she would be loved for her rich tone and classic preferences. A very eclectic music fan, Anne enjoys playing drums to works by Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich. Her taste forjazz encouraged her to pick up drums in late 2002; since then she has been playing avidly in small ensembles and school band. She also has recently found fascination with Old Timey music, and now plays banjo, much to the dismay of her rock-oriented band mates.
TIMOTHY MEEHAN: SOPHOMORE, 14, GUITAR
At the age of nine, Tim Meehan received a Johnson guitar as a Christmas present. He wasn't very
interested in it at all; his brother had a talent for the drums and was already strumming the guitar, but
Tim was not intrigued. Two years passed and Tim was asked to play bass in a band. He had no idea how to but he went with the flow and became very proficient at it. During that time, he started picking up the guitar and learning a few chords. Finally, he started to get lessons, and took those for a few weeks until he decided he wanted to end them. Since then, Tim has taught himself everything
he knows about guitar and has been involved in several bands.
JULIA FINKLE: FRESHMAN, 14, GUITAR
Julia Finkle is a freshman at Sacopee Valley High School. She has been interested in music for many
years, as she began to play the flute in her schools music program in fifth grade. She had always
fantasized about being able to play the guitar, but the dream seemed very far away. Her older sister Anne had befriended two brothers from school named Tim and Tom. Julia watched in amazement and was determined to somehow become a part of the musical talent that was
forming between the two families. Julia got her first guitar halfway through eighth grade and immediately began learning riffs, teaching herself her favorite songs, and working on deciphering
tablature. Her first performances were school projects in front of small classes, and then
progressed into playing for a large family party with her father onstage. Then formed the band Deluxe
Moses. Julia began picking up tricks and songs from fellow guitarist Tim. She is still thankful today for
the chances she has gotten to play music.
THE FORMATION OF DELUXE MOSES
In late December 2004, eldest member Thomas Meehan, the most sought-after musician in the district,
overheard Anne Finkle at a Sacopee chorus concert in which she grabbed his attention with several solos throughout the program. A few days later, Thomas asked Anne if shed enjoy sitting in with him on a few numbers with his other band; one he had created a few months earlier to display his percussion abilities. She had never sung with a band before, only solo in talent shows and performing jazz numbers, so she thought shed give rock a try. Thomas and Anne were not friends to begin with, but had connections through Thomas younger brother, Timothy. At the time, Timothy and Anne were very good friends, but hadnt really considered making music
together. Timothy was already in a band alongside Thomas, and reluctantly played bass, because he was the little brother. He was a good sport, but he found Annes support helped him to break through as a talented and multi-faceted musician himself. As the two became closer friends, they realized that their taste in music was very much the same. Thomas, being the vibrant, energetic person that he is suggested that they make a few dates to fool around with our musical talent. During the winter of 2005, Anne, Thomas and Timothy began to make snowy Sunday afternoons their practice times. During the first few sessions, they immediately began to discover the electricity they had while playing music. They quickly compiled a list of songs that they would each learn separately, and play for their next practice. Things were going well, but guitar, vocals and drums could only go so far. At this time, youngest member Julia was watching hopefully from the sidelines as her older sister began to jump whole-heartedly into this new musical creation. Though not very confident yet, she was already an accomplished flute player and singer-having been the first to make a rock single when she was ten years old. As she progressed at her new favorite toy, the guitar, the boys started to notice that Julia was getting quite good. The band still felt as though it was missing a piece of the puzzle. As Julia hesitantly showed the rest of the band her amazing rhythmic and melodic styling, they willingly allowed little sister to join them. By late 2005, the band had added quite a few songs to their repertoire. They had played numerous school functions and occasions. They decided to lay down some of the songs that they had mastered by visiting a friends studio in New Hampshire. This was everyone except Julias first time in the studio, so nerves ran high, but the band soon settled in to recording in a laid back manner that they were already so accustomed to. At the end of the day, they had recorded four cover songs, and a lovely tune written by Timothy some months before. The band hopes to record more in the future. As each member of the band represents a different grade in high school, Sacopee students enjoy how well they relate to the student body, and how they engage the audience in every performance. Parents love to see a brother/sister band that are genuinely friends, and teachers love that they are able to book them for family affairs as well as school dances and fund-raisers. Their modern taste in music allows them to keep their audience satisfied, while writing their own material and exploring other genres such as soca, bluegrass and swing keep them challenged and on their toes. Though they take their music quite seriously, they have fun with words, and decided to call the band Deluxe Moses, after the name of a wig, which Julia discovered in a theatre magazine.
