whats there to hear in Brunei? (local musicians..do they exists?)
hi there..this is my first time writing a blog using friendster. im blindnecros, the lyricist for a local band called the Epitome. now..before i go further i'd like to tell u all that i was a none believer in local artists before..i used to criticise excessively n without mercy to every local songs that i heard before. theres always something wrong with everything. but as fate prevails, in 2005 my frenz started to make a band, first of all i was sceptical n i almost ridiculed their plans. i wasnt involved at that time..yet. but when 1 of my close frenz asked for help in doing a song.. i was intrigued and want to know more. (at that time i was more into hip hop than rock, alternatives or anything associated with a band). so as i helped them in doing what i thought to be 1 song, i started to jam with them(every week!!) n the next thing i realised i was already in the band as a vocalist n lyricist. then the thoughts of failure sets in, a lot of questions were playing around in my mind. what if we failed? what if we were ridiculed? the point is that the 'what if?' were a lot and most of it were negative. but i put it aside n let fate open up the door by itself. we started to get serious with our songs with certain goals to achieve set in our minds. we started to jam in local studios n get to know a lot of local artists along the way. by end of december 2005 (juz after 6 months in the band)..we released our first single titled 'Conversation'. we aired it on pelangi fm n also kristal fm. the response from listeners n radio stations at that time was overwhelming n i could say sweeter than what i had expected. we were happy at that time n it made us more enthusiastic. only then can i see what was going on..during our first attempt as a band there were a lot of talented bruneian bands & individuals helping us (directly & indirectly) along the way. the once i used to label as wannabees and overactors of nothingness are right before my eyes..helping us!! my god..talk about sarcastic karma!! i also realized that in making music..regardless if it is malay or english..lyrics or arrangements..it isnt as easy as u think. if u were to criticise it would be more easier then trying to fit in lyrics into a song.what im trying to say is there are a lot of talented bruneians, especially bands which are really good but never got the chance to show it juz because some1 says it doesnt sound as good as western bands. saying things like those could really get ur hopes down real bad. but if u think about it how can we get better if we keep admitting defeat to stupid criticisms? have u heard blink182's early songs?? when they were new?? it sucks..but they tried n tried until they succeed!! that is what we need now! the attitude to prove what we stand for is true. so if ur listening to any local songs from any of our local bands or singer..please dont say terrible things that is not true. if u want to criticise..do it constructively n supportingly! dont u guys want our music industry to go further? i sure want to see that. so before u say anything bad, think! if u feel ur better n u can do it right..go ahead n be my guest.
*this blog is just a piece of my mind n opinion. no one was hurt in the process of making this blog..except for chipsmore of epitome. :P
