Shortly after playing showcases for Universal Records in New York, Florida-based indie- rock band Debutaunts found themselves making a record with Matt Goldman who has produced Grammy-nominated and RIAA-certified, gold-record artists such as Underoath, Anberlin, Copeland, Cartel, etc. The project was conceived and funded entirely by the band, displaying a DIY approach (without the aid of managers and labels.) The new EP aims to confront the possibility that mainstream music can be unique and genuine without fitting neatly into a genre. With mainstream music becoming more and more soulless, disposable and gimmicky, Debutaunts have created a record that is culturally relevant, fresh and in the most progressive way, speaks back to an era when music mattered and was a reflection of the times.
Debutaunts consist of Jazek Creacy (lead vocals, guitar and keys), Jonny Shupert - (lead guitar, vocals), Eric Bloomquist (bass, vocals), and Stephen Santana (drums). The band formed in 2005 with this mission statement: "We will bridge the gap in rock music that has been growing since the Beatles quit." In other words, to bring together both worlds, uniting fans of both pop music and of the most indie and underground scenes - a task that seems harder with every passing year. To hang in the balance is something most other bands are afraid of, Debutaunts were right not to be. With sold out shows, a loyal, ever-growing fanbase and a new record (P/E/M) by one of rock music's most sought-after producers, Debutaunts have proven that good music, real music, always finds a way into the hands and hearts of everyone. Front man Jazek recalls, "We've always wanted to be our own sound. Too many bands are influenced or rely heavily on examples that were set by other artists, too many copycats one way or another. Music should be much more progressive." When they started writing songs they made a conscious effort to set aside their influences; to dig deep into what music was for Debutaunts. Not surprisingly, everything that came out was undeniably unique.
Debutaunts new EP Flowers from Evil is available through cdbaby.com. The tracks are downloadable at Apple iTunes, Rhapsody, Amazon, and from the band's website and MySpace pages. A 12-inch vinyl pressing with all the songs plus dance remixes is set to be released early 2009. A comprehensive US tour is also scheduled to coincide with this release.
