In an era when music has hit a standstill, and even genres created as a reaction to this condition have leveled off at a plateau, one sect of music retains its constantly evolving qualities: hip hop. Still, even rap has entered a time in which creativity has sunk to an all-time low, with singles requiring only a beat that overpowers any lyrical skill (or, in most cases, lack thereof) becoming the norm. Dao Jones (born Cole Charbonneau), an up-and-coming artist emerging from New York’s Capital Region, is seeking to change all that.
Dao Jones began his music career at the age of sixteen, though he first developed an interest in music at the age of ten. Being one consumed with the pursuit of excellence, Dao is a skilled MC as well as a producer and in 2005, we witnessed the solidification of the artist we know today as Dao Jones: the purposeful alteration of the name of the Dow Jones Company. The name came from following the stock market on television with his father one day, but this is hardly the only way in which Dao’s family has influenced his career. His siblings, as well as his parents and extended family (including his cousin Matt Wink, who introduced Dao to his future manager and business partner, Mike Murphy), have had a paramount impact on Dao’s work, both through their guidance and never-ending wealth of support for him. This support by family and friends has not gone unnoticed by the artist himself, however; they are frequently mentioned in, and in some cases, are even the subjects of some of his songs.
In regards to his career, despite being one of the foremost unsung heroes of hometown hip hop, Dao Jones has made many successful strides towards enhancing his image, and improving his standing among hip hop artists. He has performed multiple shows locally throughout the Capital District of New York (at Northern Lights and Red Square, much to the delight of fans), as well as numerous talent showcases and, most notably, twice in the Faces in the Crowd showcase in New York City. He has also been interviewed by Hate Money Radio, iTunes number one rated hip hop radio show, in February of 2007, and has also published beats on RocBattle.com

In both his MySpace page (which features an immense number of friends for a local artist, nearly 1200, as well as 32,000 profile views and over 41,000 total plays for his songs), and his regular Facebook messages to his devoted followers on 'Dao Jones got that Hustler Muzik,' Mike Murphy and Dao Jones have been able to create an enormous following thus far. Dao Jones and 3rd World Entertainment also update their own blog, 3rdworldent.blogspot.com daily, in hopes of sharing their passion and knowledge of music. Dao cites his major influences as Jay Z, Kanye West, J Dilla, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, MF DOOM, Lupe Fiasco, and Andre 3000. This being said, we can observe that Dao Jones is seeking to expand, revise, innovate, and enhance his own music in an attempt to leave his mark on the face of hip hop.
