CURSE OF THE CAROUSEL PONY

Indie / Rock

When the Beatles first formed, people guffawed at the idea of a band with two guitar players. Portland quintet Curse of the Carousel Pony might get a few cross-eyed looks with two guitars, two high-pitched vocalists, and two basses. The competing bass lines make for rhythmically colorful hardcore that brilliantly transitions into funky, danceable, interlocking loops of rock riffs. The sort of ‘playing in rounds’ approach to rock and roll is reminiscent of Television and gives the songs a familiar yet anxious feel. Though the melodies and lyrics sometimes seem like first drafts, the dueling screeches and whines of Miller brothers Aaron and Aarik (seriously) sound like a twisted grade school sing-a-long that makes you wish one of the Millers was teaching a fourth grade class and you could take it.
