JABEZ L. VAN CLEEF

Jabez L. Van Cleef is a poet and author of more than twenty books on religious and human rights themes. His best known works are balladic verse adaptations from the Old and New Testaments, and from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Under the artist name Spirit Song Text, he has produced popular spoken word versions of the four gospels which can be heard on iSound.com, download.com, purevolume.com, and numerous other sites online. His poems have been set to music by Elliot Levine, Edie Hill, Michael Mendoza, Robert Nicholls, Anne Matlack, and other composers. His work Animalium Cantata was sung at the American Choral Directors Association convention in February, 1998 and has been performed by the Yale Camerata, Westminster Choir College, and Tokyo Voices. Many of his poems have been sung with chant tunes to mark observance of Yom Hoshoah and other memorial events, including a conference at the United Nations. He is married to Dr. Anne Matlack, director of music at Grace Episcopal Church in Madison.
