Hey everyone, Tuesday May 15th marks the release of our five song ep, entitled "Call It What You Will." To purchase one email me at frochr@bethel.edu. They are $5.
As part of the project I have researched the gray area between Christian and secular music. I found that Christian Contemporary Music has traditionally been highly focused on overt Christian ministry. Secular music has traditionally included anything but tones of Christianity. So what does it mean to be a Christian who writes songs for the sake of simply doing what God has gifted them with, while including but not solely focusing on the impact that their God has had on their life? Well besides being a Christian who writes songs for the sake of simply doing what God has gifted them with, while including but not solely focusing on the impact that their God has had on their life, it means that you have an even smaller chance of making that next to impossible contact with the right person in the music industry. This in between area can be tough to navigate. For me practically, it means that to do my job as a songwriter/performer I need to know my audience and how I can best reach them. My goal is to tactfully and realistically impact those who choose to intentionally listen in. The reason for this is because I believe in One Truth, and I believe that everyone in every stage of life can take one step in the right direction.
So what's the message? My songs are about a few lessons I've learned thus far. The general theme could probably be summed up by saying that humans in general rely on a combination of mediocre to sad status quos and a lot of false hopes, as I have done and do myself. Some examples I cite would be: human love relationships to complete us, emotions that distort perceived reality, unrealistic expectations, money, insecurity from rejection and guilt//and the pursuit of security, media based life (virtual reality), avoiding church and religion, and American sociocultural standards of image and materials. (Hopefully) these sound like they amount to a pretty sad existence. To quote a song: "it's so easy to cry when you're living a lie." This brings us back to the idea of Truth. There is a certain reliable friendly satisfying joyous Truth that counters these sad status quos and false hopes.
Perhaps unfortunately the message of this ep ends there. Yet I am satisfied that it is what it is. I would prefer the answers to come in real face to face interactions. My hope that what has been stated relates in some way to most everyone, and that even the thought of the taste of Truth will spark a question, a step, a change, a hope.
