Vanna’s life (and television history) changed forever over Thanksgiving of 1982. She went to an audition against 200 other women and was chosen by show creator Merv Griffin to replace Pat Sajak’s previous co-host Susan Stafford on Wheel of Fortune. White was a struggling waitress at the time of the audition, and later revealed how nervous she’d been.

“I wanted this job so badly. My knees were shaking; my mouth was quivering; I could hardly talk,” she shared. Regardless, she must have impressed Griffin.
