speaking of stellar, if anyone is looking for new music(a few people have asked me what i have been listening to), i have a few suggestions of stellar bands we have seen recently that you should check out. each of them has a cd that is worth the potential hassle of obtaining one. they are also all on our top 8.
Aching Wings-"Why All This Armour?"-www.myspace.com/achingwings
from grand rapids MI, Aching Wings (aka Zach Vinson) used to play in a band called amalgam with us. he is a close friend which might be colouring my opinion of his music, but this cd that he just released gives me goosebumps. his songs are so good and his piano playing is intergalactic. he achieves the delicate and difficult balance of music that is pop enough to like on the first listen and has enough depth and complexity to bring new dimensions to the song with each listen. it doesnt hurt that Joel Philip Stokdyk plays the drums on a few tracks and i bang a tamborine.
-most compared to: Ben Folds, winter
JP05-self titled-www.myspace.com/jp05
we just played a few shows with this Brooklyn, NY based band in beautiful sheboygan. Jeff Patlingrao plays in a few different formats. he prys mouths open with his guitar playing and it is a special good time when V. 3.0's female background singers are present in all their choreographical beauty. his cd has been in my car for the last few weeks and i wouldnt mind if i wasnt even able to get it out. very well done rock and roll.
-MCT: Elliot Smith, fall
The Daredevil Christopher Wright-self titled EP-www.dcwright.org
Eau Claire, WI sensation. a little hard to describe. one of the most orginal sounds that i still enjoy listening to. definitely a flaming lips influence but not as electronic. the music makes you want to sing along and dance and then think about what you were singing about over tea with good friends.
-MCT: the shins, summer
TaughtMe-"Arms as Traps"-www.myspace.com/taughtme
we played a few shows in sheboygan with this salt lake city guy and everyone ive seen since then that was there has mentioned the show. he has a really unique voice and recording style. he is working on a new record right now that we are all excited about.
-MCT: mid John Vanderslice/Bjork, spring
my mom also liked all these bands. buy there music and go to the shows. you might not be dissapointed.
