Aphorisms

People go on being received, even feared perhaps, provided they realize exactly when theyre causing pain. But a person who wounds without realizing the extent of the wound is looked on as a fool, a blunderer who doesnt know how to use his opportunities; and everyone despises him. (pg 77)
I think this aphorism describes how a person with a high emotional intelligence can be far more successful than a person who has low emotional intelligence. The ability to read people, react and shape your own actions as a result of theirs is known as emotional intelligence. People interacting with someone with high EQ feel important and like they are being taken seriously and respectfully. As a result, in some cases someone with a high EQ can get away with more questionable activity than someone without. Also, one with low EQ could be shunned immediately without ever getting the chance to be successful.
It can happen to any of our feelings. The human heart is like a treasure house: empty it at one go, and youre ruined. We are as hard on a feeling for showing itself too completely as we are on a man for not having any money. (pg 81)
The above statement addresses the great amount of weight emotions carry in the human psyche. It also talks about how much people shield their emotions from those around them. It states that if ever a man divulges exactly what they are feeling at that exact instant, they will be crushed by those around, rarely will support ever be shown. It also states that humanity as a whole is unapologetically tough on the overly emotional, with the same zeal as when dealing with beggars.
Look on men and women simply as post horses, and leave them behind as soon as theyre exausted (pg 82)
I this statement deals with how people wishing to further themselves in society often use others as stepping stones on their unapologetic conquests. A literary element used was metaphor, comparing men and women to post horses, or at least stating that they should be treated as such.
If there is one feeling innate in a mans heart, is it not pride in perpetually protecting someone weaker? If to this you add love, the source of their pleasures, then you will understand a host of moral oddities(pg 92)
This aphorism talks about understanding the actions of man on the most basic of levels. If you examine man at the smallest level then the actions of a majority or larger group will make more sence. In terms of this example, the fact that most of mans motivation for action has to do with helping those he loves results in a lot of the larger problems and occourances we find in society today.
The moment money slips into a students pocket, an imaginary pillar rises inside him for him to lounge against. (pg 100)
