There is a tourist town in Northern Wisconsin on the shore of Lake Superior by the name of Bayfield. What most people dont know is that there is a band from central Minnesota that goes by the same name. Coincidence? I think not.
The story says that front man Tedd Hathaway used to visit the small town on a somewhat regular basisand then she dumped him. So, the town became a metaphor for his relationship with his ex: beautiful yet angry, reminiscent yet longing to forget. With these ideas in mind, Tedd set out to write music that people his age would be able to identify with and tap their toes to.
Bayfield is currently working on getting their debut EP reproduced to be sold to the multitudes of kids who have been demanding them after every show. They are also designing T-shirts and other various items to be sold to the same demanding kids. While the guys are excited to get their first EP out to the world, their sound has matured exponentially since it was recorded almost a year ago, just one month after the bands conception. Their main concern is that they are able to get back into a studio to set their sound in stone.
Bayfield has devoted their lives to music, making it the top priority on members list. After attending numerous local shows and noting the lack of heart, energy and dedication other bands have on stage, the guys show their gratitude to the kids who support them by giving nothing less than their all on stage, even if it means nursing bruises, sore vocal chords or cuts the next morning.
While the details of how the guys actually found one-another are somewhat complicated, it all began when Tedd met a drummer while attending a technical college in Hutchinson. Tedd was brought in to be the singer/guitarist for the ultra-poppy-punk group For the Girls. Adam Johnsen played lead guitar and Cody Jergenson played bass. After almost a year, the drummer lost interest and left Cody, Adam and Tedd to fend for themselves amidst the sea of St. Cloud garage-rock and indie kids.
Cody and Adam knew they didnt want to be labeled as a sell out band and Tedd knew he wanted to write for his heart, not for his wallet. After a few months, they brought in Brandan Johnson to play drums for a more serious project. While the four sounded fine, it was decided that Tedd was much better at singing when he didnt have to focus on playing the guitar at the same time. Enter Jon Schulte as the rhythm guitarist and backup vocalist. Ironically, Jon and Brandan were in a band called Soap Box in high school.
The math is correct. Three parts For the Girls and two parts Soap Box add up to form a beautifully rounded and emotionally influenced band that call themselves Bayfield.
