Battle-Axe, formed in 2003 with Thomas Groves on drums, Joseph Lonsdale on rhythm guitar and Callum Blanchfield on lead guitar. At first the band played covers from the likes of Led Zepplin, AC/DC and Judas Priest...although this soon changed when starting to write origional material which was highly influenced by legendary thrash band Slayer.
Later in 2004 several practise sessions were recorded, and this is where an iconic Battle-Axe song took shape. The song was origionally named 'Iron Maiden Type Thing' because it was basically '2 Minuites To Midnight' in discuise. Later to be re-named Viking Warrior (can be downloaded from the music player above).
As another year went by the band soon progressed and played their first gig at The White Swan in Idle. Not many people turned up as it was a Sunday afternoon...But Battle-Axe still worked hard at practise sessions. And soon after Paul Waite joined the band on bass guitar. At this point there was still no vocals. In September 2005 Battle-Axe were asked to support Soul Transplant & Von Schlieffen at Cj's Music Bar in Keighley. It went well, but people wanted vocals and not just instrumentals.
This was when Stephen Whitaker joined the band on vocals, 2 weeks prior to playing at the 1 In 12 Club, Bradford, with extreme power metal band Unforgotten Oath. It all worked out and over 100 people came to experience history in the making.
October 2005; Thomas Groves left the band to start his own shred band with another guitarist, Luke Clough (AKA The Governer Of Shred)...Battle-Axe were left without a drummer. While searching for a new member we came across Scott Hymas, who was able to fill the role on drums.
After a extended break over the christmas, we came back in 2006 which has already been a good year for us, headlining at the 1 In 12 Club on 27th January with support from Death Of Narnia, Soul Transplant and Munition. And also on 28th January supporting our friends Unforgotten Oath and Militia. Probably one of the best Battle-Axe performances to date was probably at the Bradford Rio 17th February, where over 200 people enjoyed almost 3 hours of earthquake causing metal from 3 bands known as 'The Bradford Metal Triangle'.
Unfortunately soon after, bassist Paul Waite decided he was going to leave us to do other things. But this didn't stop the band as Luke Edmondson replaced Paul on bass duties.
The band is still going strong and hope to be playing gigs all over the place in the summer months...BE THERE!
