Members: Andy Coenen
Bartelby began as an awakening of something buried deep inside. Beginning in the summer of 2005, Philadelphia native Andy Coenen began crafting songs on his beat up guitar in the small hours of the night. These midnight sojourns into the world of creative expression sparked a deep passion within the former student and opened up a door through which vast reserves of creative potential were unleashed. The collective mass of a life's worth of eclectic musical stylings absorbed both consciously and unconsciously have boiled over the flame of a passionate mind and find their way to the world through Coenen's raw guitar and vocals. Coupled with an infinite array of digital tools and sounds, Coenen shapes these unchained melodies into music that is unique and experimental yet strangely familiar.
Childhood dreams of rock stardom aside, Coenen never realized just how much much music lied dormant inside of him until plunging headfirst into songwriting. "One of the greatest challenges in making music has been having too much on the table to work with", a reflection of the seemingly unraveled fashion in which Coenen composes. "It all starts with an idea, that often just pops out of nowhere... I can't explain it. I can't begin to tell you how many ideas I've had that I've been completely infatuated with that have simply disappeared... gone forever, I guess"
Which makes his latest endeavor even that much more challenging. Finally graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, Coenen has begun serious work on completion of his first full-length album, Embryo Connection. The lack of a record label or even a demo tape has not deterred him from his singular goal. "I want to complete a finished project first, then take it from there. Right now, everything is lined up in a way that I'm very excited about." The album promises a mix of subtle acoustical stylings and hard-hitting rock with sounds ranging from electronica to trip-hop, blended together in a style that is wholly original yet completely accessible. "I admit, I'm a novice at all of this. But there's something inside of me that needs to come out and see the world". We're waiting.
