Paper Shredders - Protecting Your Business And Your Identity

blog post
Anybody who is employed by a company that handles private, sensitive data will admit that certain of the most basic things a person can do when it comes to data security is to properly get rid of sensitive data once it serves its purpose after they are through with it. Simply throwing confidential data within the trash open a company or a person as much as serious liability.

Any paperwork simply thrown in the trash opens up an enormous liability just because a person can easily pick with the garbage and get information like social security numbers / credit card numbers / etc. If a person steals someone's identity which is later says this really is due to careless handling of sensitive information with a company, that company could be sued, as well as for lots of money.

Obviously, this philosophy doesn't just apply to large companies, individuals should be mindful in the proper disposal of their paperwork too. People can just as easily root with an individual's trash and get the data they need to open credit lines and perform some serious damage to an individual's credit rating.

The simplest way to prevent data from being stolen is to control how documents are disposed of, and the simplest way to get this done is to purchase a paper shredder. Paper shredders come in many styles, from simple trash-can mounted home shredders that can 5 or 6 pages at a time, to larger, heavy-duty paper shredders that can take a large number of pages or even more at a time.

Shredders often cut either in a ribbon or a crosscut pattern. Ribbon pattern shredders cut papers into thin strips, and cross cut shredders cut paper into tiny little pieces. Cross cut is certainly safer, but an individual would need to spend a significant quantity of effort trying to come up with pages cut apart by a ribbon-cut shredder. Either kind of shredder may be used to destroy confidential paperwork, and for the price, a paper shredders covers itself tenfold whether it prevents someone from stealing information.

Paper shredders are essential for any application where confidentiality is involved, from individuals having to shred personal documents, to companies needing to shred thousands and thousands of papers annually. These come in many styles and capacities, and all do a sufficient job of destroying confidential data. Realistically, if an individual or company needs to dispose of paperwork with over a name or address onto it, it may be to their benefit to shred it.
